GOSHEN COUNTY – This week, educators in Goshen County and beyond are attending a three-day conference with world-renowned speakers at the area’s own Torrington
Middle School.
The training focuses on the idea of “Response To Intervention,” the practice of helping students who are struggling by using specific procedures or educational tools.
The RTI at Work Institute, also known as Solution Tree, is featured at the event, and offers “unprecedented access to nationally recognized experts who have successfully implemented RTI in a variety of settings often with limited personnel and dwindling resources,” according to the company website.
Leading RTI experts Luis F. Cruz, Austin Buffum, Mike Mattos and more spoke to all of Goshen County School District No. 1’s certified staff, as well as at least 100 other attendees from across Wyoming.
“This is a way for the (faculty) … to look at their intervention systems,” Curriculum Director Donna Fields said at the GCSD No. 1 board of trustees meeting Tuesday evening. “Not only intervention, but enrichment (for the students) … and based on common assessment results … that’s the lens we’ll be looking through as a district.”
Fields coordinated with Solution Tree to host the conference in Torrington after local elementary principals went to an RTI conference in Denver, Colo. and recommended every teacher attend.
“It’s an exciting event,” Fields said at Tuesday’s meeting. She added the success of local schools’ performance ratings can be attributed to professional development events such as the conference currently underway at TMS.
Training began Wednesday and wraps up today (Friday).
