TORRINGTON – The Grassroots Garden Club will host its annual plant sale from 7 – 11 a.m. today (Friday, May 17) inside the 4-H Building on the Goshen County Fairgrounds campus on U.S. Hwy. 26 west of Torrington.

The sale will feature a variety of flowering plants from local gardens. The Garden Club also offers bed thinning for over-enthusiastic perennials. Call (307) 532-5073.

Community 

blood drive

TORRINGTON – The city of Torrington and Vitalant – formerly United Blood Services – will host a Community Blood Drive, set for 12:30 – 5:30 p.m., Monday, May 20, at the Lincoln Community Complex in Torrington.

There are 53 spots available for the drive, so appointments are suggested, but walk-ins will be welcome. To learn more and to schedule appointments, call (307) 638-3326 or go online at bloodhero.com.

Summer hours set

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College will move to its summer hours beginning May 20.

Summer hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays. Regular hours of operation will return Aug. 16.

EWC to hold 

registration event for local students

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College has announced that new student registration will be held for Goshen County students on May 21 at the main campus in Torrington. Students will meet with an advisor and register for the Fall 2019 semester. 

Students will have the opportunity to begin with the ACCUPLACER placement exams, if needed. This placement exam is used to ensure placement into the appropriate English, reading and math courses. There is a fee of $20 for these computer-based exams. Students should bring a calculator for the mathematics portion of the test. 

Financial Aid staff will be available to assist students with the financial aid process and preparing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Historic programs announced

GOSHEN COUNTY – The Goshen County Historical Society and the Western History Center in Lingle will host separate programs this month in Torrington.

Motherhood in the Last Generation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, in honor of Mother’s Day. The Western History Center will host a panel of county moms – including Marge Newman, Marion Hageman, Marj Zavorka, Mary Houser and Myrna Stuckert – will be on hand to discuss what motherhood was like in “the good old days.”

Local geologist Del Bass of Torrington will be on hand at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, to talk about Historic Happenings in Crescent Basin – Northern Goshen County. Crescent Basin is a geological feature in and around the Fort Laramie area.

The Community Room at Platte Valley Bank, Main Street in Torrington, will be host venue for both programs, which are free and open to the public.

WyoParks hosts Free Fishing Day

CHEYENNE – Daily use fees at state-operated will be waived Saturday, June 1, in honor of Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s annual Free Fishing Day event.

Guernsey State Park in Platte County is one of the parks across Wyoming offering free fishing opportunities. 

Free Fishing Day is offered annually by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and involves lakes and reservoirs throughout the state.

AAUW to host concert fundraiser

TORRINGTON – The Torrington/Wheatland branch of the American Association of University Women is partnering with the Eastern Wyoming Arts Council to host a special concert and fundraiser to help raise money for AAUW scholarships.

Swiss/French acoustic guitarist Claude Bourbon will be the featured artist for an afternoon concert, set for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, in the CTEC Commons at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington. Bourbon will present a selection of medieval and Spanish blues during the event, featuring tea and light refreshments.

Madelon Daniels, co-president of the local #AAUW branch, said, “We welcome this opportunity to partner with the Eastern Wyoming Arts Council and thank the Council for bringing this musical event to Torrington.”

Bourbon is no stranger to Torrington where he performed in 2014 and in Scottsbluff, Neb., in 2013. To learn more about Bourbon visit www.claudebourbon.org.

Quilting camp to be offered

TORRINGTON – The Goshen County Quilters will host a camp this summer designed to share their love of the artform with the next generation.

“Kids Learn to Quilt” for youth age 9 to 17 is scheduled 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 17 to 20, in the Community Room at Platte Valley Bank, Main Street, in Torrington. Cost for the camp is $25 and all fabric will be provided.

Participants will learn the basics of quilting and will produce a lap-sized quilt in colors of their choice during the camp. No sewing experience is required.

A limited number of partial scholarships to cover the cost of the camp are available. For more information, or to obtain a registration form, call Terry Haines at (307) 532-5221. Registration forms are also available at elementary school offices.

Deadline to apply for “Kids Learn to Quilt” camp is June 1. The class is limited to 15 students.
