Cemetery costs to increase

TORRINGTON – Ordinances raising the cost of lots within the municipal cemetery and raising the cost for interment and disinterment were both passed by the council on first reading Tuesday night. According to Torrington Mayor Mike Varney the last time prices were increased was 2012.
The proposed costs of a cemetery lot are
• Single (5’ x 7’) $400 for a resident and $800 for non-residents.
• Double (10’ x 10’) $750 for residents and $1,300 for non-residents.
• Infant (2’6” x 5’) $200 for a resident and $300 for nonresident.
• Cremation (3’ x 5’) $300 for residents and $600 for nonresidents.
The cost of interment is dependent on whether it is performed during the week or on a weekend and residency. The proposed costs are for residents

The ordinance must pass two more readings, March 21 and April 4, before it becomes law.
In other business:
n Mayor Varney reported the city received a letter from Vyve, the company that provides cable TV services to city residents, that indicated the company will be dropping CBS station KGWN, on channel 5, and adding the CW Network on station KSTF, which can be seen on channel 10.
KGWN is transmitted from Cheyenne, Wyo. and is a duplicate CBS station, while KSTF is out of Scottsbluff, Neb. and will provide non-duplicate programming.
The change is scheduled to take place on April 20, 2017.
• The third reading of an ordinance creating a power cost adjustment for electrical rates was passed unanimously.
• The city council received the 2016 independent audit form Leo Riley & Co. and it found no major issues in in the city’s procedures or accounting practices. The report also indicated it did not find and “significant deficiencies of the major federal awards programs, the major program being improvements at the municipal airport.
• The next scheduled meeting of the Torrington City Council is Tuesday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in the city council chamber at city hall.
