LARAMIE – The Maxtrix 10U soccer team, comprised of young players from around Goshen County brought home medals from the annual Turf Wars 5v5 Tournament over the weekend on the campus of the University of Wyoming.

The tournament is played inside the Cowboys’ indoor football practice facility and featured many teams from around Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska.

“The kids loved it,” Maxtrix coach Jeshua Arnusch said. “First off, they get to play on turf, and second off, it’s such a quick style game. It’s 5-on-5, so you are trying to hit the ball and score every time you touch it.”

The Maxtrix 10U went 5-0 on the weekend in the Gold Bracket, scoring 46 goals and only giving up 13, and the Maxtrix was one of 20 teams in the Gold Bracket.

The team defeated Casper 9U 10-1, Green River 11-2 and Gillette 7-5. The Maxtrix defeated Laramie 6-1 in the semifinals, and the Casper 10U 12-4 in the championship match.

In the title match every single kid scored at least one goal, according to Arnusch.

“It’s fun for them to go out and win and have a chance to have so many fans around. There were hundreds and hundreds of fans in there,” he said. “The place was loud and exciting. It’s a cool opportunity, and hopefully, they’ll stick with it so they can contribute to the high school team.”

In 2022, the Maxtrix 10U team went 17-2-1, scoring 116 goals and gave up only 15. The season included a 13-game win streak.

“It’s been a good, fun group,” Arnusch said.

The Turf Wars Tournament was the final event for the Maxtrix until Spring. They will get started again in March before hitting the road with tournaments in Colorado, South Dakota and Utah.
