Yankees draw closer to Cardinals

TORRINGTON – The Yankees poured on 18 runs Tuesday against the Cardinals to cruise to an 18-4 win, drawing within one game of the league leading Cards in the standings.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, with Nolan Long, Kealy Carson and Carson Schultz all scoring in the first inning. Long scored again in the second, giving the Cardinals a 4-3 lead heading into the third.
Down by one run heading into the third, the Yankees started moving runners around the bases. They added four runs in the third, five in the fourth and six in the fifth. The five Yankees that scored in the fourth, were five of the six that scored in the fifth as well.

Mateo Correa was big for the Yankees, getting on base five times, all via walk, and scoring four runs in the win. Ayden Desmond, Ty Bennick, and Remington Mathson all scored three times in the win.
On the other diamond, the Mets continued their recent hot streak, picking up a win via walk-off over the Cubs, 7-6.
Mac Hibben and Ryder Hackbarth both scored in the top of the first, but the Mets battled right back, scoring three of their own in the bottom of the inning with Tyler Nicolay, Austin Short and Dawson McFadden all coming around to score. The Cubs added two runs in the third, with Hibben and Ryan Moorehouse crossing the plate, to take a 4-3 lead.
In the fourth, Summer Bruckner came around to score for the Mets, knotting the game up at four. The Cubs plated a run in both the fifth (Hackbarth) and sixth (Zabdiel Munoz), while the Mets scored one two in the fifth. With the game tied at six heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Mets found their way into another walk-off win, with a runner coming around to score.
The Yankees upped their record to 5-4, with the Cardinals sitting in the top spot with a record of 6-3. The Mets broke the tie for third after beating the Cubs (3-6), setting their record at 4-5. The four teams played each other Thursday after the press deadline. The city tournament starts Monday, with the No. 1 and No. 4 seed squaring off, while the No. 2 and No. 3 seed meet. Both games are set to start at 5:30 p.m.
