Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies serves Goshen County

TORRINGTON – Roughly a dozen volunteers lined up under the hot sun at the Goshen County Fairgrounds on Saturday to help distribute food donated by Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies.

According to Goshen HELP Executive Director Kyle Borger, 200 local families had their cars packed with boxes of dried and frozen goods.

“Lots of families got great food,” Borger wrote in an email to The Telegram after the event.

The seemingly never-ending line of vehicles appeared daunting, but it did not stop volunteers from quickly packing trunks and restocking the tables. Attendees being confined to their vehicles while volunteers stayed outside did not limit conversation, smiles and laughs either.

Gwen Taylor, Director of the Goshen HELP food pantry, has participated in the mobile pantry for three years. The drive-thru method is new amid the pandemic, but “seems to be going quite well,” according to Taylor.

“The drivers suggested we find a place where we could have two lines of traffic, and so that’s what we’re going to look for next,” she said.

Goshen HELP’s food pantry has also implemented a drive-thru distribution process which eliminates shoppers’ choice, but still allows residents to get the food they need. The opportunity to help neighbors in this tough time “means quite a bit” for Taylor and her husband, she said.

“A lot of people really appreciate what we’re doing, so that’s rewarding,” Taylor said.

Borger said there was enough supplies for approximately 400 families. Produce and frozen items were taken on by Goshen HELP’s food pantry, which people can visit by registering on their website, GoshenHELP.com. There is no income requirement, though families who qualify for TEFAP can indicate that.

“Goshen HELP is working hard to provide the same support as the food truck over the course of a month, so that people don’t have to wait for hours in a line for the food truck,” Borger said.
