Violet Agnes (Dolly) Smith

VETERAN – Violet Agnes (Dolly) Smith, 84, of Veteran, formerly of Lewistown, Mont., passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 29, 2019, at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer. 

She was born March 5, 1935, in Jordan, Mont., the daughter of Earl and Alice (Bauman) Adams. She received her education in Roy, Mont., graduating from Roy High School in 1953. She then attended Northern Montana College in Havre and received her degree in elementary education. She taught grade school at Hilger and Suffolk, Mont.

On July 8, 1957, she was united in marriage to Vernon Smith in Sheridan. They lived and ranched near Winifred, where they raised their three children. When she stopped teaching, she began as a cow/calf producer and raised Registered Quarter Horses on her ranches in Montana and Nebraska until she retired and moved to Veteran.

She was supportive and encouraged her children throughout their Rodeo events in calf roping and ladies barrel racing.

Dolly is survived by daughters Joan, of Veteran, and Jacqueline, of Melstone, Mont.; son Vaughn of Veteran; grandsons: Jason (Aimee) Rich, Dillon (Alexandria) Rich; and seven great-grandchildren: Shamus, Adeline, Thera, Oskar, Paislee, Cash and Joplyn Rich, all of Billings, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her husband, brother Monte Lund and parents.

Graveside Services for Dolly Smith were 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, in the Lewistown City Cemetery. Reception followed at the Eagles Club. The Cloyd Funeral Home assisted the family.
