TORRINGTON – “It helps the kids, it helps the school, and there’s just so much community involvement with that. It’s a wonderful event,” Eddie Juve, who organizes the Valley Christian School Soup Supper and Auction, said this week.
Now in its 26th year, the annual gathering typically fills the Goshen County Fairgrounds Rendezvous Center with around 800 attendees.
“In fact, this is a good complaint to have … the Rendezvous Center is really not big enough for our (event) anymore,” Juve said.
This year, the soup supper and auction kicks off Saturday, Feb. 2 at 4:30 p.m. for residents who wish to view silent auction items ahead of time. Potato soup and chili is served at 5 p.m., and the live auction begins at 6:30 p.m. A shopping spree raffle drawing – sold separately and valued at up to $750 – will take place, and the kids’ carnival will be ongoing throughout the evening.
“We still have more auction items coming in – I’m really excited about it,” Juve said. “We have Frontier Days’ tickets this year: Lady Antebellum – really, really good seats -Tim McGraw tickets, Keith Urban tickets, Sunday Final Rodeo tickets … we have a 65-inch big screen TV … there are so many things.”
Last year, VCS Principal Cheryl Stoeger said the fundraising event often garners between $35,000 and $40,000.
“Being a private school, VCS does not get state or federal money at all,” Juve explained. “Whatever we raise … helps pay teachers’ salaries, goes to school supplies, lunches we provide … all proceeds go to the school. Everything we do, we do by fundraiser.
“It’s just a really good school,” she continued. “The teachers care about what goes on with these kids, and you can’t ask for a better education than that.”
Tickets are $5 each, available at the door. Children three years of age and younger are free.
“It takes weeks and months to prepare for this … and then the three hours goes by in the blink of an eye,” Juve said. “We’ve got a good group of volunteers – the parents help out, the kids help out. Platte Valley Bank, Main Street Market, Pinnacle Bank are some of our major sponsors – we have so many sponsors that are looking out for us, we just couldn’t do it without them.
“I have to really give the community a hand,” she added. “Without them, the soup supper would be nothing, and they support it – a big hats off to them.”
