TORRINGTON –Beta Sigma Phi Alpha Alpha, a local philanthropic sorority, might not be certain about the number of years it’s hosted Ladies Night Out. But one thing is certain – the annual event to raise money for those battling breast cancer in Goshen County is a hit.
Beta Sigma Phi offers 500 tickets to the Thursday evening festivities, which include a raffle and door prizes, supper and entertainment, all of which sell out prior to the event, according to committee vice president and publicity chairman Barb Hansen.
“It originally started in the basement of the Presbyterian church in town with very few people,” Hansen said. “It has grown every year to where we’re at now – we can handle 500 people and that’s it.”
The main draw of Ladies Night Out, aside from raising funds for a good cause, is the entertainment.
“It started out different,” Hansen said. “There was not quite as much (entertainment) as there is now – it has evolved.”
Every year for more than a decade, the all-female crowd enjoys watching area males dressed as famous artists and/or in gender-bending outfits lip-syncing – sometimes actually singing – and dancing.
“We have new entertainment every year, and every year our theme changes,” Hansen said.
This year’s theme is a surprise, she said.
While the night is hailed as one of the most entertaining evenings of the year, Ladies Night Out also raises several thousand dollars to help women in Goshen County pay for mammograms and breast cancer treatment.
“There are many women in Goshen County who do not get a mammogram and they really need it,” Hansen said. “We are really encouraging all women to get a mammogram, and if they can’t afford it, we will pay for it.”
This year, Ladies Night Out is Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Goshen County Fairgrounds Rendezvous Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and entertainment starts around 7:30 p.m. Limited tickets are still available at Pinnacle Bank or from any of the Beta sisters.
“We just encourage everybody to come out,” Hansen said.
