FFA students participate in state contest at EWC

TORRINGTON – Wyoming State FFA Vet Science Contest participants descended on Eastern Wyoming College on Monday with hopes to earn a spot at the national competition in November.

Georgia Younglove, who teaches ag classes at the college and coaches the local livestock judging team, said each of the 53 FFA chapters around the state is allowed to bring one team of four students to the contest, which tests participants using three methods: written exam, identification and practicum.

Students identified equipment, parasites and breeds; and, for the practicum, were required to either halter a horse or restrain a cat and count prescription pills or remove a suture.

“You’ll see a mix of students who (participate),” Younglove said. “Students who really want to go into vet science, and those who are more ag production-oriented. It’s important they know these things wherever they plan to go.

“It’s a great, hands-on experience before they graduate,” she said.

Individual and team awards will be announced at the Wyoming State FFA Convention and Leadership Conference April 18-21.
