Twisters snag two of three to close season

GREELEY, Colo. – The Torrington Twisters 14-and-under softball team won their first two games of the Last Won Tournament over the weekend in Greeley by a combined score of 24-2, before dropping their first game in the bracket.
The Twisters opened up the weekend with a hot start in pool play, defeating Fever Fastpitch (Frank), 10-1. Torrington racked up three runs in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third, before the Fever scored their lone run in the fourth. The Twisters added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to close out the win.
As a team, Torrington amassed nine hits to the Fever’s four. Calysta Trevino and Mariyah Avila both had two hits in the win, with Paityn Homan, Brady Laucomer and Avila pacing the team in RBIs, with two apiece. Avery Fox, Brylee Dean, Emily McGaugh and Avila each scored twice.
Fox got the win on the mound, pitching three and two thirds innings, allowing four hits and an earned run. She threw strikes on 61 percent of her pitches and struck out one batter. Dean came in to throw one pitch, drawing a ground out.

Torrington continued their hot streak into their second pool play game. After giving up a run in the top of the first inning to the Boulder Valley Pride, it was all the Twisters. They scored two runs in the bottom of the first and after blanking the Pride in the second inning, Torrington brought around 12 runners to up the score to 14-1. Boulder Valley failed to score in the third, ending the game after three innings.
Calysta Trevino toed the rubber, picking up the win after throwing two and two thirds innings. She allowed four hits and an earned run, while striking out three batters and walking one. Dean came in again for one out, drawing another groundout.
A.J. West had a big day at the plate, as the only Twister with multiple hits, with two. She added an RBI to her stat line. Trevino led Torrington with two RBIs, with five other Twisters each accounting for one. Fox, Laucomer and Emily and HeLena McGaugh each crossed the plate twice. Peyton Kriewald had a double in the win.
The Twisters finished first in their pool, with the top-two teams in each of the four pools advancing to a bracket to be played out Sunday. Torrington took on the Fort Collins, Colo. Stars, the second seed from Pool A, to open the bracket.
The Stars jumped out to an early lead over the Twisters, posting two runs in the top of the first innings. They added another run in the third and exploded for five runs in the sixth. Torrington plated a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it was too little too late, falling 8-1.
Six Twisters had a hit in the win, as Torrington and Fort Collins both had six hits in the game. Trevino crossed the plate for the sole Twister run, with the RBI coming fro West.
Trevino and Fox each pitched three innings in the loss. They combined to allow six hits and five earned runs. They struck out three, walked five and drew 10 groundouts and four fly outs.
The Twisters tied for fifth this past weekend. The tournament was their final action of the summer, ending the season with a 36-17 record.
