GREELEY, Colo. – The Torrington Twisters will be riding a 13-game winning streak going into the USSSA National Tournament in Arkansas starting Wednesday, July 25.

The Twisters went 5-0 over the weekend, extending their record to 54-9.

“It was a pretty good weekend,” Twister coach Dan Fox said. “We scored a lot of runs and are pleased with the offense going into Nationals.”

On Thursday alone, Torrington outscored its opponents 32-8.

They opened the tournament with a 12-3 win over the I-25 Inferno.

The Twisters jumped out to an 8-0 first-inning lead and cruised to the nine-run victory.

HeLena McGaugh and Kierra Miller recorded two hits apiece, while Avery Fox earned the win. Calysta Trevino got the save.

In the second game of the day, the Twisters exploded for six runs in the first, five in the second and three in the third en route to a 20-5 win over the Northern Colorado Sting,

Miller drove in four and scored three times on a 2-for-2 day at the plate, while Brylee Dean added three more hits. Brady Laucomer and Fox tallied another two hits in the win.

On Sunday morning, the Twisters found themselves in a tight battle with the Fever Fastpitch in an 8-7 victory.

After plating four runs in the bottom of the first, the Fever battled back and took a 7-6 lead heading to the bottom of the third inning.

Paityn Homan grounded out but managed to score McGaugh to tie the game, and in the next inning, Fox connected on a solo home run to put the Twisters back in front for good.

McGaugh went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Trevino picked up the win.

The Twisters added to their win total with a 5-2 victory over the Rocky Mountain Thunder on Sunday afternoon.

Fox and Brady Laucomer paced the attack with a pair of home runs.

“Avery and Brady really sparked the offense,” Fox said of the duo who combined for four home runs over the weekend.

Both home runs came in the bottom of the first to jumpstart the win as Torrington plated four of its five runs in the first inning.

Fox and Laucomer combined for a 5-of-6 day with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Fox also picked up the complete-game victory, striking out three.

In the championship contest, the Twisters knocked off the Denver Blizzard, 9-6.

Denver got off to a hot start with four runs in the top of the first, but Torrington responded with six runs in the home half of inning.

The Twisters never trailed again the remainder of the game.

Torrington added three more runs in the bottom of the second, while Denver tried to rally in the closing innings, scoring a single run in the third and fourth innings.

The Twisters were limited to only four hits in the game – one each from Fox, Avery West, Emily McGaugh and Miller.

“(Avery West) is one of the best catchers I’ve coached,” Fox said. “No one runs on her when she’s behind the plate.”

Fox got yet another win in the circle for the Twisters.

“It was a good tournament to come off a break and going into Nationals,” Fox said.

The Twisters will leave Saturday and begin play at the USSSA Bentonville Super 32 National Championships on July 25 in Arkansas.

Torrington will join teams from Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Illinois at the season-ending tournament.
