Twisters go 5-2 at nationals

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – After a 3-0 start at the 2018 USSSA Midwest Nationals, the Twisters Fastpitch 14U team wrapped up the tournament with a 5-2 record.

The Twisters returned to the field Thursday with an 11-3 win over the Colorado Psyclones.

The Psyclones scored twice in the top of the first inning, but the Twisters responded with three in the home half of the inning and never trailed again.

They plated four in the second, adding two more runs each in the third and fourth innings.

The Twisters collected nine hits for the game with Kierra Miller leading the way with a 2-for-2 game to go along with two RBIs.

Jaci Piercy got the win in relief of Calysta Trevino. Piercy struck out four.

The game was the only game of the team played that day.

On Friday morning, the Twisters suffered their first loss to the Arkansas Bombers, 8-7.

The Bombers scored at least one run in each inning, and for the first two innings, the Twisters matched the Arkansas team.

Heading to the third, the Bombers plated three and extended their lead to as many as s8-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

A bases loaded walk followed by a double from Avery West cut the deficit with to 8-6, while Piercy singled driving home another run.

However, the Twisters rally came up one run short.

Piercy was tagged with the loss, striking out one over 2 1/3 innings.

Offensively, the Twisters collected seven hits – one each from Brady Laucomer, HeLena McGaugh, Avery Fox, West, Piercy, Emily McGaugh and Miller.

Later that morning, the Twisters knocked off the Quad City Lady Hitmen, 4-3.

The Twisters got RBIs from HeLena McGaugh and Trevino to go up 2-0 after one inning.

They added to their lead in the bottom of the third with two more runs, but Quad City made things interesting in the top of the fifth with a pair of two-out runs.

Fox managed to induce a ground ball to get the Twisters out of the inning and pick up the save.

Brylee Dean went 2-for-2 to lead the Twister offense, while Trevino, HeLena McGaugh and Laucomer added one hit apiece.

Piercy picked up the win, striking out three over 4 2/3 innings.

That afternoon, the Twisters squared off against the Fat City Angels, a team based out of Jonesboro, Ark.

The Angels jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but they did most of the damage in the third inning with eight runs.

The Twisters only offense came in the bottom of the fourth, coming with two outs on the scoreboard.

Laucomer and Fox had RBI hits, while a wild pitch scored the game’s final run.

The loss ended the team’s stay at the 2018 USSSA Midwest Nationals, and the Twisters’ record stands at 59-11.
