ARVADA, Colo. – The Torrington Twisters 14-and-under softball team kicked off the 2018 season with a tournament win in Arvada over the weekend, finishing with a 5-1 record.

Twisters 7, Devastation 3

The Twisters kicked off the year with a 7-3 win over the Devastation from Golden, Colo. Torrington scored a run in the opening inning, but by the fourth, the score was tied at two. The Twisters exploded for five runs in the fifth inning and one run by Golden in the bottom of the frame was not enough to make up the difference, giving the Twisters the win.

In the win, Brylee Dean had a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Brady Laucomer, who had a triple, and A.J. West each had two hits in the win for the Twisters. West, Calysta Trevino and Avery Fox all had an RBI.

On the rubber, Dean pitched three innings, allowing one hit, two runs, one of which was earned, while striking out two batters. Fox was on the mound for two innings, allowing one hit and one run, finishing the game with six strikeouts.

Twisters 18, Coyotes 0

Continuing with pool play, the Twisters put on a performance at the plate against the Coyotes from Agate, Colo., racking up 15 hits and scoring 18 runs in two innings. Torrington plated 14 runs in the first, followed by another four in the second.

Fox and Helena McGaugh paced Torrington with three hits apiece, with both also scoring three runs. Fox led the way with four RBIs, while McGaugh, Trevino and West each kicked in two apiece. Trevino, West and Dean all had two hits in the game, with Laucomer, Kierra Miller and Emily McGaugh each recording one hit.

Fox pitched all three innings for the Twisters, allowing one hit and two walks, while striking out five batters.

Stars 7, Twisters 4

The Twisters had a four-run fourth inning that fell short of bringing the team back in its final game on Saturday. The Stars, from Broomfield, Colo., scored two runs in the second and three runs in the third inning. Torrington had four runs in the fourth, but another two runs by the Stars in the bottom of the frame put the game out of reach.

Miller had a three-run homerun during the game, giving her three RBI. Fox, West and Emily McGaugh rounded out the Twisters with hits, with Fox recording a triple.

Trevino pitched three innings, allowing six hits, six runs, five of which were earned, while finishing the game with two strikeouts. Fox also took to the mound, allowing a hit and a run.

Twisters 8, Crush 4

Torrington’s pool play record earned it a first-round bye in the bracket starting on Sunday. The Twisters’ first game of the bracket came against the Colorado Crush from Parker, Colo. After a scoreless first inning, the Twisters scored three runs in the second, but the Crush regained the lead in the top of the third, scoring four runs. Torrington turned things around in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs to pick up the win.

Helena McGaugh led the way at the plate with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Dean had two RBI on the night with her two-run homer. Six other Twisters had a hit in the win, with four, other than Dean, recording an RBI.

Dean pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and two earned runs. She did strike out three batters. Trevino was on the mound for 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs.

Twisters 5, Crush 4

In the semi-finals, the Twisters took on a different Crush team, but both are from Parker. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, with the Crush adding another two runs to its total in the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Twisters scored three runs and the Crush could not get any runners across the plate in the fifth, giving Torrington the win.

Trevino had two hits in the game and scored a run in the game. She, along with Laucomer, Fox and Emily McGaugh all had an RBI in the win. Trevino’s RBI came on a homerun.

Fox pitched all five frames for the Twisters, firing off 81 pitches, 69 percent of which were strikes. She surrendered six hits, four runs, two of which were earned, but she did strike out two batters.

Twisters 9, Stars 4

The win over the Crush put the Twisters in the championship game against the same Stars team that Torrington fell to a day before. The Twisters got on the board in the first inning with a run, before both teams scored two runs in the second inning, putting the score at 3-2 in favor of Torrington.

The third inning proved to be huge for the Twisters, as they played three runs, followed by another run in the fourth to go up 7-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Stars added two runs to their total in the bottom of the frame, but another two in the top of the fifth by the Twisters put the game out of reach.

Laucomer had a great day at the plate, recording two triples and scoring twice. West and Helena McGaugh both had two hits in the win, with West knocking a double and McGaugh recording two RBI. Dean’s lone hit in the game was a double as well. Trevino and Arianna Camacho both scored two runs in the game.

Trevino pitched three and a quarter innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs. She struck out a batter. Fox took the mound and pitched for 1 1/3 innings, recording the save, allowing only three hits and one earned run.

At the end of the weekend, the Twisters sit at 11-1 this season, including a 6-0 mark carrying over from a tournament in October.
