TORRINGTON – Torrington’s Logan Harris was named the 2017 boys’ Milward Simpson winner, earning him the distinction as the best boys’ athlete in the state from the 2017 graduating class.
In the 42 years the honor has been awarded, Harris is the first Torrington boy that has been recognized. Throughout his high school career, the Blazer was named all-conference three times and all-state seven times.
In football, Harris cracked onto the varsity field as a freshman and continued to develop each year, playing on both offense and defense starting as a sophomore. During his senior campaign, Harris averaged 16.8 defensive points and 6.6 tackles per game. Throughout the 2016 season, he accounted for 8.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, four pass breakups a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. He earned all-state twice for his work on the gridiron.

During the winter sports season, Harris took his talents to the throwing ring. He competed for Cheyenne Central during indoor track and field. He picked up the win at the state meet in the shot put each of the past two years and he also set the state indoor shot put record with a throw of 61 feet, 2 inches.
Harris continued his success in outdoor track and field, making the state meet each of his four years as a Blazer. By his sophomore year, Harris finished second in the shot and third in the discus at the state meet. He continued to make waves at the state meet, winning the shot put event as a junior and senior, while snagging silver as a junior in the discus and gold in the event as a senior.
At the state meet this spring, Harris was the man to watch in the throwing ring. He beat the overall state shot put record with a throw of 63 feet, 8.5 inches, breaking a record set by John Godina in 1990. He crushed the competition, recording a throw of more than 10 feet further than any other shot put thrower at the state meet.
The Torrington grad is set to compete for the University of Wyoming’s football team in the fall.
The Milward Simpson award is one of many awards that Harris received throughout his high school career. On top of his all-conference and all-state accolades, he was named the 3A Defensive Player of the year and 3A Lineman of the Year this past season. He was named to the Casper Star-Tribune Super-25 and USA Today All-Wyoming first team, twice.
