Torrington wrestling 1-2 at home quad

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School wrestling team opened the home portion of the schedule with a quadrangular, hosting Laramie, Burns/Pine Bluffs and Saratoga/Hanna-Elk Mountain.

The Blazers went 1-2 with the lone win coming to end the day against Saratoga/H-EM.

Torrington opened the day, spotting Burns/Pine Bluffs a 36-0 lead, ultimately falling 66-15.

Rhiley Grubbs put the Blazers in the scoring column at 195 pounds with a 3-1 decision. Sam Sorenson backed the win up with a pin at 220 pounds.

Burns/Pine Bluffs rattled off five straight wins before Michael Sandusky capped off the dual with a pin at 132 pounds.

In the next bout, Torrington raced out to an 18-0 lead but came up short 54-24 against the Class 4A Laramie Plainsmen.

Matthew Hellus set the tone for the Blazers with a quick 46 second pin over Brock Bailey at 145 pounds. Bryce Hager and Marcos Martinez backed the win up with pins at 152 and 160 pounds before the Plainsmen won the next three bouts to close the gap to 18-15.

At 220 pounds, Sorenson picked up his second pin of the day, extending Torrington’s lead to 24-15.

Sorenson’s victory proved to be the final win of the dual for the Blazers. Laramie won seven straight to close out the dual victory.

In the final dual of the day, Torrington defeated Saratoga/H-EM 26-18.

Hager scored a 12-4 major decision, while Martinez got a 32 second pin to open the dual. Sorenson and Sandusky picked up additional pins, while Riley Duffield had a 9-0 major decision at 132 pounds.

The dual win was the first of the season for the Blazers.

Torrington is back in action at 10 a.m. Saturday, squaring off against Glenrock, Niobrara County and Lingle-Fort Laramie/Southeast at the annual Blazer Duals.
