Torrington Tigers go 1-2 in Gering Tourney

GERING, Neb. – The Torrington Tigers 15-and-under baseball team posted a 1-2 record at the Gering Tournament over the weekend, falling to Alliance, Neb. and Wheatland, while beating Chadron, Neb.
The Tigers opened up the tournament Friday against Alliance. In four innings, the Tigers were unable to score, falling 10-0. Sam Firminhac had the best game at the plate, recording two of the team’s five hits. Teddy Carr, Nick Sherbeyn and Jackson Jones accounted for the other three hits for the Tigers.
In a high-scoring affair against Chadron, Torrington came out on top. Heading into the fourth inning, Torrington held a 9-8 lead. Chadron plated six runs in the fourth, taking a 14-9 advantage into the fifth.
Torrington scored twice in both the fifth and sixth innings to head into the seventh inning down 14-13. Firminhac, Gabe Mitchell and Tristan Kingsley all came across the score in the top of the seventh to build a 16-14 lead. Chadron was unable to score in the seventh, sealing the win for Torrington.
Firminhac again proved himself at the plate, scoring four runs and adding four hits and two RBIs to his stat line. Gage Correa and Carr also had multiple hits in the win. Eight different Tigers crossed the plate to score at least one run.

To close out the tournament the Tigers fell to Wheatland, 9-8. Torrington scored two runs in the first and another in the second. Five straight Tigers scored in the third to give the Tigers their eight runs, but it was not enough to get the win. Over the final three innings, the Tigers had only 11 batters step to the plate.
Firminhac, Carr and Sherbeyn each had two RBIs in the loss. Firminhac and Carr were the only Tigers that had multiple hits. Sherbeyn scored twice to pace the Tigers in scoring.

Double-header
On Thursday, the Tigers squared off against Sidney, Neb. on the road in a double-header, winning both games. They scored one run in both the second and third innings of the first game, before plating two runners in the fourth. Torrington added a run in the fifth and sixth to snag the 6-4 win.
Firminhac paced the Tigers in hits, with three, while Murphy, Mitchell and Caeden Riley each had two hits in the win. Gage Correa score two of the six runs in the win. Wayland and Murphy each had a double.
Torrington fell behind early in the second game, facing a 2-0 deficit after the second inning. The Tigers exploded for five runs in the third inning to take a lead. Sidney came back to knot things up at five heading into the fourth inning, where the Tigers scored three runs and cruised to the win, 8-5.
Murphy, Firminhac and Carr each had two RBIs in the win, with the other two coming from Mitchell and Correa. Carr was the only Tiger with multiple hits in the second contest.
Torrington now sits at 9-9 on the season. The Tigers played Scottsbluff, Neb. in a home double-header Tuesday after press time. They return to action against Kimball, Neb. in a double-header Thursday. Games are set for 5 and 7 p.m.
