TORRINGTON – The Torrington Sharks hosted its annual swim meet on Saturday.
Nearly 180 swimmers from Torrington, Lusk, Bridgeport, Neb., Alliance, Neb., Hemingford, Neb., and Sidney, Neb. invaded the Dale Jones Municipal Pool.
The Shark roster featured 40 individuals and 16 relay teams.
“We were really happy with the results,” Shark head coach Ethan Creager said. “We took a lot of wins home. We had swimmers win races that I don’t think expected to win races. We had a couple swimmers in their first meet ever go home with first-place finishes.”
Torrington collected 20 individual and three relay victorious on the day.
Abby Dykes won all four of her events while setting two meet records in the 9-10-year-old girls 200 IM and the 200 free after setting two records in the first meet of the season at Bridgeport.
“Abby set records in half of her events this year which is incredible,” Creager said. “She’s really easy to coach. She’s a great leaner and great listener.”
Tyne Stokes also won all four events she entered in the 15-18-year-old division.
“Tyne is one of the strongest swimmers I’ve ever watched. She wins races doing things the other swimmers don’t do as well,” Creager said. “Her turns are great. She’s great off the blocks. She does all the little things right.
“Those two are pretty incredible swimmers,” he added of Dykes and Stokes. “They are fun to watch. They swim like no other swimmers do in our league.”
The Sharks travel to Sidney for the pentathlon meet on Saturday.
The pentathlon will feature every swimmer competing in a 25 or 50 in every stroke depending on their age group, along with a longer free style.
Swimmers will collect points based on those finishes and the top three in each age division will receive trophies.
“It’s a great test of how good overall of a swimmer you are. You have to be strong in every stroke and technically good enough to not get disqualified in any of the strokes,” Creager said. “It should be fun to see. We encourage swimmers to swim out of their comfort zones at the meets. We are well prepared for the meet this weekend in terms of we have swimmers that can do everything.”
