TORRINGTON – The Torrington Rotary Club representative Tom Kelly presented information to the Torrington City Council on Tuesday about the CARES training program that provides information and training for community members who want to help with family members or friends battling dementia or Alzheimer’s.
“We really want to get the community involved in this,” Kelly said. “Our goal is to get volunteers trained to help keep (dementia) sufferers in the home as long as possible.”
The club received $4,000 in grants from Rotary and Goshen County Economic Development Corporation to purchase the software training program, which they can use for
two years.
After completing the training, which is a total of 30 hours, participants receive certification stating they are qualified to provide respite care for dementia sufferers, which can give a family care provider a much
needed break.
“The training covers everything from the early onset of the disease to end of life,” Kelly said. “And is really an invaluable tool for anyone in the community.”
CARES training is held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Goshen County Senior Friendship Center.
In other news:
• Citing the importance of water as a natural resource and the need for all citizens to be responsible stewards of that resource, the Torrington City Council approved a proclamation recognizing May 7 to 13 as Drinking Water Week.
• A catering permit was granted to Table Mountain Vineyards, LLC for the Spring Fling event to be held May 5, form 4 to 9 p.m. at 21st & Main. According to the request the Java Jar and Farm Girls Boutique will be staying open late and live music will be provided by Rich Reyes.
• A third reading of an ordinance establishing the power cost adjustment added to electrical rates was approves as was the second reading of an ordinance establishing sewer fees and charges for customers who do not have flow meters.
• The city council approved the 2017 swimming pool rates, most of which were marginally increased over 2016.
