TORRINGTON – The Torrington Rotary Club representative Tom Kelly presented information to the Torrington City Council on Tuesday about the CARES training program that provides information and training for community members who want to help with family members or friends battling dementia or Alzheimer’s.
“We really want to get the community involved in this,” Kelly said. “Our goal is to get volunteers trained to help keep (dementia) sufferers in the home as long as possible.”
The club received $4,000 in grants from Rotary and Goshen County Economic Development Corporation to purchase the software training program, which they can use for
two years.
After completing the training, which is a total of 30 hours, participants receive certification stating they are qualified to provide respite care for dementia sufferers, which can give a family care provider a much
needed break.
“The training covers everything from the early onset of the disease to end of life,” Kelly said. “And is really an invaluable tool for anyone in the community.”
CARES training is held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Goshen County Senior Friendship Center.
