Torrington names new police chief

TORRINGTON – Torrington Mayor Randy Adams announced the appointment of Matthew Johnson, a longtime sergeant of the Fort Collins, Colo., Police Department, as the next Chief of the Torrington Police Department on Monday Johnson’s appointment was approved unanimously by the Torrington City Council Tuesday night. 

Johnson comes into the position with 19 years of experience under his belt, a master’s degree in Public Administration, training endorsements from the FBI and a wealth of other certifications and experiences that Adams said the city had never seen in an applicant for the position. 

“Matt Johnson came to us out of the blue with incredible qualifications, great experience, education that we have never seen before in an application to be the chief in all of the years I’ve been involved with the city of Torrington,” Adams said. 

“He seems to work really well with his staff in Fort Collins, and he was highly recommended by the staff there. We’re tickled to death to have him.”

Johnson briefly joined the Torrington City Council meeting on Tuesday, which was held on videoconference service Zoom. Despite, experiencing some technical difficulties, he was able to hear the mayor and council’s unanimous vote. 

“Thanks,” Johnson said. “I’m really excited to be here.”

Johnson will begin work in Torrington on June 15. According to a press release issued by the city on Monday, Johnson has won two Medals of Valor for his service in Fort Collins, and teaches online courses through Regis University, where he earned his master’s. 

“In addition to his duties as District 1 Sergeant, he has experience as a school resource officer, and as a Special Agent criminal investigator in the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency,” he said. “He has served four years on the Fort Collins PD swat team and is the department’s current Hazmat instructor.”

“The Johnson family is very excited to be joining the community of Torrington and I can’t wait to start in the new position,” Johnson said in the press release. 

“We are excited to have Chief Johnson and his family join us here in Torrington,” Adams said. “He is looking forward to working with Interim Chief Mike Matthews and our highly skilled and professional group of Torrington Police Department officers.  He brings to us a wealth of experience and training, and a strong commitment to the community of Torrington.”
