Torrington Lady Blazers defend home court

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers completed the sweep over the Wheatland Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, winning in three sets to seal their first home win of the season.
“I think it sets a good tone for us. It’s always nice to win at home and even better to have a sweep with all three teams,” coach Chelsi Jackson said of the freshman, JV and varsity teams all winning their first home game of the season. “I think Tuesday’s games were just the confidence boost the girls needed.”
The Lady Blazers racked up three aces, all from Katelynn Wright, and nine kills in the first set. Torrington held on for the win, 25-20. Chrissy Lira and Logan Murphy paced Torrington in kills in the first set, with three apiece. Lira and Ashley Schlagel each had a stuff block. Adia Sherbeyn led the team in digs, with four, followed by Taylor Walsh, who had two.
Murphy led the Lady Blazers in kills in the second set, with three. Sherbeyn chipped in two in the 25-19 win. The duo combined for five digs, while Walsh added two of her own. Wright, Sherbeyn and Brooklyn Tucker each had an ace in the win, while Tucker added two kills to her stat line. One area that Torrington struggled was in serving, finishing the second set with only a 76 percent serving percentage.

“We struggled with serving last night but they knew that if we lost the ball due to a serving error, it was crucial to get a good pass and get it back so the other team couldn’t get a run on us,” Jackson said.
Torrington was put to the test in the third set, but the Lady Blazers managed to pull out the 25-22 nail biter to seal the win.
“I think having that type of pressure [three close sets] is good for the girls and shows that they have good character when it comes to staying focused and knowing they have to do this for each other and not themselves,” Jackson said.
The third set was the best set that Torrington had at the service line, recording a 91.7 percent serving percentage.
The difference in the third set proved to be the increase in kills by the Lady Blazers, from nine in both the first and second sets, to 14 in the third. Murphy topped the list in kills, with 10, while Sherbeyn added another three. Sherbeyn led Torrington in digs, with six. Murphy and Wright combined to rack up six digs in the win. Nakalyn Garner was big at the net in the third set, recording two blocks.
Throughout the match, Tucker paced Torrington in assists, with 11. Wright added eight assists of her own.
The Lady Blazers hit the road for the next game, coming on Friday against Riverton. The action starts at 3 p.m., with the varsity game slated for 5 p.m.
“Riverton girls are much bigger than us, as we are not a very tall team, so this week we are going to really need to work on hitting high hands and placing the ball to empty spots on the court to be successful,” Jackson said. “It should be a good match for us and the girls will do good things, as they always play up to the competition.”
