DAYTON– Leading 13-7 in the second quarter, Torrington gave up 41 unanswered points to the WyoPreps.com No. 2 ranked Tongue River Eagles on Friday afternoon in a 48-13 loss.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Blazers picked off a pass and three plays later, Greyson Shields hauled in a catch to put THS up 7-0.
Tongue River tied the game at seven, but with 3:04 left in the half, Shields broke free for a 98-yard kick return to go back in front 13-7.
“A lot of shooting ourselves in the foot. Right before half, when the football went to one side, we flipped our hips and went to the other side,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “It was a quick pick, and they scored quickly.”
Tongue River tied the game at 13, but at halftime, the Eagles went into the locker room up a score.
“They pooched one, and we weren’t able to get on the ball after it hit one of our players,” Stienmetz said.
Things quickly unraveled for Torrington in the second half.
“The third and fourth quarter, we could not get over those moments from the first half and not forget them,” Stienmetz said.
The loss drops Torrington to 1-5 on the season and 1-3 in the 2A East Conference.
The Blazers will return home for two straight games.
“We are excited to be back home and to play in front of our crowd,” Stienmetz said. “We need to take each week one at a time. Right now, all we can focus on is beating the Glenrock Herders.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wiseman Field.
“They are back to the double-wing,” Stienmetz said. “We are going to have to be disciplined. We have to have unselfish defensive players and fly to the ball. It’s hard to see who has the ball, and we’ll have to be very, very assignment sharp. Offensively, we’ll have to take what they give us.”
