SIDNEY, Neb. – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers faced three tough teams over the weekend at the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout in Sidney, losing to Beatrice, Neb., Buffalo and Laramie.

“This past weekend, we played some good teams and they exposed things that we need to work on as we head in to conference play,” coach Jeff Halley said.

Beatrice 59, Torrington 26

Adia Sherbeyn paced the Lady Blazers with six points to open the tournament, shooting 3-of-7 from the field. She was also second on the team in rebounds, with five, while adding a steal.

Fellow seniors Taylor Walsh and Logan Murphy kicked in five points apiece. Walsh knocked down the team’s only three-pointer, while adding two points from the charity stripe. Murphy led the way on the boards, coming up with nine rebounds, while Walsh chipped in two boards, an assist and a steal.

Jade Reinhardt turned in four points on 2-of-3 shooting. Hailey Hashman, Brielle Bivens and Chrissy Lira all turned in two points each. Hashman had two rebounds and led the Lady Blazers with three steals, while Bivens and Lira combined for four rebounds and a steal. Laura Halley, Renee Cline and Brooklyn Tucker combined for four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

In the loss, the Lady Blazers shot 24 percent from the field, and just 20 percent from behind the arc.

Buffalo 59, Torrington 23

After drawing a tough opening opponent, the Lady Blazers’ second round matchup came against third-ranked Buffalo. The Lady Bison handled Torrington in a 59-23 contest.

“The first two games, we were a little lethargic and didn’t compete well,” Halley said. “We also didn’t shoot well at all the whole weekend.”

Walsh shot 4-of-6 from inside the arc to top the scoring sheet with eight points. She had a board, an assist and was a defensive menace, picking up five steals in the loss.

Sherbeyn, with six points, and Murphy, with five points, rounded out the top scorers. All six of Sherbeyn’s points came from the free-throw line. Murphy had six rebounds to pace Torrington, including five off the offensive glass, while tallying two steals and Torrington’s two blocks. Sherbeyn rounded out her stat line with three rebounds and a steal.

Halley and Tucker, with two points apiece, rounded out the scoring for the Lady Blazers. Tucker finished with four rebounds and three steals, while Halley kicked in another rebound.

Hashman, Bivens, Lira, Cline and Dani Masterson combined for eight rebounds, with another steal coming from Hashman.

Torrington’s shooting percentage dropped to 14 percent in their second loss of the weekend, knocking down 18 percent of their shots from inside the arc and missing all 11 of their three-point attempts. From the free-throw line, Torrington shot 69 percent.

Laramie 49, Torrington 38

Following the loss to the No. 3 team in 3A, Torrington’s final opponent of the weekend came from Wyoming’s 4A ranks. The Lady Blazers put together a solid half, holding a lead in the second quarter and heading in to halftime only down three. The second half dispelled the Lady Blazers, falling 49-38.

“On Saturday, we finally battled and played with some intensity,” Halley said. “With a few breaks, we could have pulled off a big win over a 4A school.”

Murphy finished with double-figures in the scoring department, pouring in 11 points, including seven from the free-throw line. She also had an assist and tied for the team lead in both boards and steals, with five in both categories.

Sherbeyn kicked in nine points for Torrington, along with five steals. Walsh turned in seven points on 3-of-6 shooting from inside the arc and a point from the charity stripe. The senior also finished the game with two rebounds and two steals.

Tucker and Masterson added four points apiece, while combining for two boards and five steals, with four of those steals in Tucker’s stat line. Lira rounded out the scoring with three points, along with five rebounds, four coming on offense. Cline and Halley combined for four rebounds and two steals.

The Lady Blazers are now 2-6 on the young season. They begin conference play this weekend, hitting the road Friday for Newcastle, with the tip set for 5:30 p.m.

“We definitely have to work harder and get more intense with our defense heading into this week,” Halley said. “Our shooting will come as our defense gets us better looks and confidence.”
