Torrington girls miss cut for state tourney

BUFFALO – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers suffered an opening round loss to Rawlins at the 3A East Regional tournament on March 2 and could not fight their way into a spot for the state tournament.
“We knew going in to regionals that we would have to put together three good days and have to pull an upset to get to the state tourney,” coach Jeff Halley said.

Rawlins 70, Torrington 60
Sydney Hill was the top scorer for the Lady Blazers, with 18 points. She shot 6-of-9 from the field and drained 6-of-10 from the charity stripe. Hill completed the double-double, adding 11 boards and four steals to her stat line.
Taylor Walsh drained two of Torrington’s four three-pointers on Thursday. She amassed 12 points, four boards and two steals. Logan Murphy, with 11 points, and Adia Sherbeyn, with 10, rounded out the top scorers for Torrington. The two combined for seven boards, two assists and eight steals.
The Lady Blazers shot 35 percent fro the floor, including 25 percent from behind the arc. Walsh led Torrington in converted three-pointers, with two, while Sherbeyn and Shelbey Prusia each had one. At the charity stripe, the Lady Blazers shot 12-of-28.
“On Thursday, Rawlins played extremely well and we couldn’t quite get past them,” Halley said. “That made out path (in the tournament) much more difficult.”

Torrington 44, Newcastle 41
In a loser out game, Torrington took on Newcastle and secured the win to advance. At the end of the third, the Lady Blazers held a 32-27 lead and kept that same five-point advantage for the first part of the fourth. The Lady Dogies brought the game to within three. But Torrington held on to secure the three-point win.
“Friday we played within ourselves and got the win to stay alive. It has been a battle all year with Newcastle and this was no exception,” Halley said. “It came right down to the end, but our girls kept their composure and got the win to stay alive for Saturday.”
Sherbeyn notched two shots from deep and racked up a team-high 18 points against Newcastle. She also had team-highs in boards, with seven, and steals, with four.
Murphy was the only other Lady Blazer in double-digits, contributing 11 points, five boards, a steal and an assist against Newcastle. Walsh added eight points, a rebound, an assist and two steals, while Prusia chipped in four points, four boards and a team-high three assists.
The Lady Blazers’ shooting percentage dropped to 33 percent on Friday, but they did convert on 33 percent of their shots from behind the arc. At the free-throw line, Torrington nailed 72 percent of their attempts.

Buffalo 56, Torrington 46
Against Buffalo, Torrington faced a 14-12 deficit after the first frame. The Lady Blazers rallied to take a 26-24 lead at intermission. They let that lead slip in the third and gave up a 19-2 run, heading into the fourth down 43-28. The Lady Blazers did outscore the Lady Bison in the fourth quarter, 18-13, but it was not enough.
“Saturday against Buffalo in their gym was a tall task,” Halley said. “They are senior loaded, talented, physical and confident. With all those things against us, our girls went with them toe-to-toe. We held a lead at half, but finally ran out of gas in the third quarter and gave up a 19-2 run. We battled back in the fourth, but it was too big of a hill to climb.”
Hill closed out her career as a Lady Blazer with 15 points. She shot 5-of-8 from both the field and the charity stripe and recorded a double-double with 10 boards. She also had a steal and a block to her credit.
Murphy was the next biggest contributor for Torrington, chipping in eight points, six rebounds, a team-high five assists and three steals. Prusia, with seven points, and Walsh, with six, rounded out the leading scorers for the Lady Blazers. The two combined for three boards, an assist and a steal. Brooklyn Tucker paced the Lady Blazers in steals, with four.
For the second straight game, Torrington shot 33 percent from the field. They nailed 29 percent from behind the arc and 48 percent from the charity stripe.
The Lady Blazers finished the season 10-12, with a 3-3 record in their quadrant. Worland, Douglas, Buffalo and Wheatland qualified for the state tournament out of the east.
“I am proud of our girls how they battled hard to the end,” Halley said. “We improved a lot this season. We will greatly miss our seniors Shelbey and Sydney. They helped lay a good foundation this year for us to be back toward the top of the heap next season.”
