TORRINGTON – The Torrington City Council oversaw a short meeting on Tuesday night in the council chambers at Torrington City Hall.

Mayor Randy Adams started the meeting by addressing the power issues caused by Saturday’s blizzard, and commended workers on their efforts during the storm.

“The new substation went down near the Nebraska line,” Adams said. “I saw some videos where the power lines were swinging back and forth and smacking together, and that is what shorted everything out. They kept trying to re-energize it and they couldn’t do it.

“They spent a good deal of time, working all night, to figure out a way to bring power up from another substation along the Nebraska line. They were able to get it to Torrington.”

Adams said Torrington Electrical Department crews located issues within the city’s substations, which they had to repair.

“Once it got to Torrington, Dana (Youtz, Electric Superintendent) took over,” he said. “They found problems in our substations and some closures wouldn’t stay closed.”

Adams took a few moments to thank the city’s emergency responders for their efforts during the storm.

“I’d like to congratulate all of our emergency staff and responders who responded about as well as they could have during a high-pressure situation,” he said. “We had a blizzard, we had a power outage, we had cold temperatures and it was dark. The Torrington Police Department did all it could to answer calls. It was stressful and high-pressure, but it was handled. We appreciate that.”

In other business, the city unanimously approved a catering permit for Table Mountain Vineyards to cater the Goshen County Economic Development Christmas Parade event on Friday.

Adams reported that Dietzler Construction is finished with the frontage road overhaul on the east side of town, and that Dietzler will return in the spring to seed the median and green spaces.
