CHEYENNE – The Torrington Trailblazer boys tennis team dropped a match to Cheyenne South on Tuesday, 3-2, with Torrington’s two wins coming in doubles action.
“South has a pretty good team so going 2-3 against them, there is no shame in that,” coach Lyle Wiley said. “The boys fought hard.”
Kelly and Clay Peterson had a solid game in No. 1 doubles, besting Mark Henson and Rueben Moute in two sets, 6-4 and 6-0.
“Kelly and Clay rolled. They played great,” Wiley said. “They were a little bit slow and sluggish at the start, but they haven’t played doubles together yet so that kind of makes sense. Once they got going, they really dominated that match.”

Levi Wickham and Mason Weis again went to three sets in No. 2 doubles for the second time this season. They won the first set 6-4, before dropping the second via tiebreaker (9-7). The Blazer duo battled back to win the third set 6-4.
Mason Brummell and Jaysen Stitt rounded out the doubles teams for Torrington. In No. 3 doubles, Brummell and Stitt dropped their match in two sets, with the score being 6-1 for both.
Brian Fenn took a crack at singles for the first time this season, competing in No. 2 singles against Cheyenne. He dropped the first set against Wyatt Ebben 6-4 and fell in the second set 6-2. Ethan Creagar had a tough draw in No. 1 singles, matching up against Brenddan Lock, 2016’s No. 1 singles runner-up. Creagar fell in two sets, 6-0 and 6-1.
“Ethan went up against one of the top players in the state. Brenddan will compete for a state title,” Wiley said. “It’s not that I don’t think Ethan has a chance to play with a player like that, he actually played really well, but he needs more opportunities to play guys like that.”
Koby Ringle and Kaden Wunibald competed in JV action for the boys, while Jodee Powell and Sarah Hawkins competed in girls’ JV action.
The Torrington girls took on Natrona and Kelly Walsh on Thursday after press time. The Blazers return to the court for home action in a triangular Saturday. They are set to take on Sheridan at 9 a.m. and Laramie at 3 p.m.
“Sheridan is top-down a really good team,” Wiley said. “They’ll compete for a state title this year in the boys, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think we can compete with them… Laramie is the same way. They have a lot of depth.
“The ladies have a really good chance against Laramie… I don’t know much about the Sheridan girls, but I definitely think we should be able to compete with them.”
