Torrington boys shooting for return to state

DOUGLAS – The Torrington Trailblazers are coming off of a consolation championship last year at the state tournament and they will need to navigate this weekend’s regional tournament to make another trip to Casper.

The Blazers closed out the regular season with three losses, falling to Wheatland, Rawlins and Buffalo, the latter two are ranked first and second in the WyoPreps rankings. Before those losses, Torrington won seven of eight games, so the Blazers will need to get back to mid-season form.

The Blazers kicked off the tournament against Worland, who entered this weekend with an 8-11 record. Torrington won the only matchup between the two programs on Feb. 2, 62-55. The action between the Blazers and Warriors happened Thursday before press time.

Buffalo and Wheatland await both Torrington and Worland in the second round, depending on Thursday’s results. As mentioned, two of Torrington’s recent losses came against Wheatland, 60-59 in double overtime, and Buffalo, 63-35. The Blazers do have an earlier season win over the Bulldogs, but also an earlier season loss to the Bison. Top-ranked Buffalo comes into the weekend with a 19-4 record, while Wheatland is 7-14.

Newcastle is the top seed from the eastern quadrant with a 12-6 record. Newcastle beat Torrington in the first meeting of the year, 79-66, but the Blazers got their revenge on Feb. 9 in a 62-53 decision.

Joining Newcastle on the other side of the bracket, second-ranked Rawlins will be a tough outing for anyone with a 15-6 record. Douglas and Thermopolis are the other two teams Torrington could meet later in the weekend. Douglas is 6-15 on the year, while Thermopolis comes in at 1-17.

Recently, Torrington suffered a 58-36 loss to Rawlins, as well as a loss to Douglas on Feb. 8. Earlier in the season, however, the Blazers picked up wins against both the Bearcats and the Bobcats.

If the Blazers want to punch their ticket to the state tournament, they will need to reverse recent trends and string together wins, like they have shown the ability to do this winter.
