GILLETTE – The Torrington Little League All-Stars opened the Little League District No. 2 Tournament with a split in the opening round on Monday evening in Gillette.

The Torrington 11-12-year-old All-Stars pulled out an 8-4 thriller over the Laramie All-Stars, while the 9-10-year olds late game rally came up short 11-8 against the Gillette Nationals.

In the 11-12-year-old game, Torrington grabbed an early 1-0 lead courtesy of an RBI ground out by Matthew Hellus.

From there, starting pitcher Bryce Hager took over.

He struck out seven over the first 2 2/3 innings, leaving the game with a 4-0 advantage.

After he was pulled from the game, due to pitch count, Laramie managed to make a comeback and tie the game at four in the fourth inning, but over the final two innings of play, Torrington relief pitcher Ayden Desmond shut down Laramie.

Torrington recorded six straight outs over the final two innings, while the bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth inning with four more runs.

Desmond picked up the victory for Torrington.

In the 9-10-year old game, Torrington jumped out to a 5-1 lead after an inning and a half of play, but the remainder of the game belonged to the host Gillette Nationals.

The Nationals went on to defeat Torrington 11-8 thanks to a six-run fourth inning to go in front 11-6.

After a scoreless fifth, Torrington looked to make things interesting in the top of the sixth inning.

Parker Ochsner led off the frame with a walk and two batters later, Torrington loaded the bases with a walk. An infield single and another walk cut the deficit to 11-8 with only one out on the scoreboard, but Gillette tallied two consecutive outs to get out of the bases loaded jam.

The Little League District Tournament continues throughout the week in Gillette. The younger team faced elimination on Tuesday, while the older team faced Rawlins in the second round.
