Torrington 9-10-year-old All-Stars headed to state; 11-12-year-olds come up short
TORRINGTON – The Torrington All-Star teams saw much success at last week when they hosted the 2021 Wyoming District No. 2 Tournament at the Torrington Sports Complex.
The 9-10-year-old team qualified for the state tournament, finishing runner-up in the Minors Division.
The squad opened the tournament with a 12-9 win over Gillette and defeated Platte County 10-5 to reach the championship bracket finale.
Torrington fell to Laramie 4-0, forcing a second game against Gillette on Friday afternoon. The All-Stars blanked Gillette, 8-0.
The win locked up the berth into the state tournament and set up a rematch with Laramie. For the second time in the week, Laramie got the best of Torrington 10-5.
In the Majors bracket, Torrington outscored the competition 32-2 in the first two games of the week, defeating Douglas 17-0 on Monday and Casper 15-2 on Tuesday.
Much like the younger team, the 11-12-year-old team faced Laramie in the championship bracket final, falling 10-1.
Facing a must-win game against Gillette on Friday afternoon, the All-Stars held an 8-4 lead going into the sixth and final inning. After two quick outs, Gillette stormed back and scored five runs, including a two-run home run for a walk off victory.
The loss ended the season for the older All-Star team, while the victory punched the ticket to the state tournament for Gillette.
