Local students earn state science fair accolades

TORRINGTON – Several local students were recognized for their success at the Wyoming State Science Fair during the Goshen County School District No. 1 (GCSD No. 1) Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday evening.
The event was held March 5-7 at the University of Wyoming.
According to Roger Spears, GCSD No. 1 science instructional facilitator, local winners are as follows:
Junior Division (Grades 6-8)
Bree Coxbill, Southeast Junior High School
First place, Junior Division, Plant and Animal Sciences
Special Awards:
Anne Wolfe Special Award for Excellence
 
Danielle Clapper and Carly Keller, Southeast Junior High School
First place, Junior Division, Physics and Astronomy
 
Jaycee Myrtle and Sheela Flury, Southeast Junior High School

Third place, Junior Division, Chemistry/Energy: Chemical

Kyland Fuller, Lingle-Fort Laramie Middle School
First place, Junior Division, Robotics/Embedded Systems/Systems Software
Special Awards:
University of Wyoming Cybersecurity Education and Research (CEDAR) Award. Winners receive mentorship opportunities to enhance or develop computer science components of their current or future science fair projects. Additionally, the award also includes support, in the form of one-on-one computer science professional development and/or classroom visits for a teacher of the student’s choice.
Wyoming State Science Fair Broadcom Master’s (ISEF) 2017 Nominee. Broadcom MASTERS (Junior Division) nominees are invited to complete the online application, and are eligible for valuable prizes and awards. This nomination is an honor, and distinguishes these projects as among the top 10 percent in the nation. From the entrants, the top 300 MASTERS (formerly called semifinalists) will be selected, and 30 finalists will be announced this fall. Each finalist will be invited to compete at the Broadcom MASTERS Finals from Oct. 19-25, 2017.

Genius Olympiad: Exceptional Genius Award and Invitation to present her project at the International High School Science Fair on the Environment June 12-17, 2017 in Oswego, N.Y.
Wyoming State Science Fair International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2017 Finalist. One of six Wyoming students who will be presenting their science fair projects at Intel’s ISEF in Los Angeles, Calif. May 13-19, 2017. ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. Each year, approximately 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for on average $4 million in prizes.
“Although our overall numbers of participants were down from previous years, we are very proud of the 15 students who represented Goshen County School District,” Spears said in a statement to the Telegram. “There is a great deal of time and effort that goes into each of these projects that is done outside of the regular school day, and many of these projects students started back in August.
“A special thank you goes out to all of their teachers, administrators and parents who have helped them throughout this entire process, and our hope is that they all learn from this experience and start thinking about next year.”
