Timothy Hurd sworn in as Chief of Police

TORRINGTON – With all of the Torrington Police Officers attending in support of the new Chief of Police a ceremony performed by City Treasurer Lynette Strecker swore in Timothy Hurd. 

Torrington now has a Chief of Police to help in the control of crime. Chief Hurd is very community oriented, focusing himself and the department to become more acquainted with the residents of Torrington. Hurd is not new to leading a police department, serving as chief of the Glenn Rock Police for the past several years.

Mayor Mike Varney asked Councilman Randy Adams to give a report on the Wyoming Association of Municipalities summer convention in Pinedale. The governor attended the convention with tours of the Mountain Man Museum. In the evening at the banquet the Grass Roots Garden Club was recognized for covering the ditch that ran from the west side of Torrington to the central part of the city, making it into a walking trail. Dennis Estes accepted the award for the city of Torrington and the Grass Roots Garden Club. Estes was also instrumental in helping the covering of the ditch and development of the walking path.

The Torrington swim team the Sharks came before the council. Speaking for the team, Manager Marie Flanagan, Swim Coach Ethan Creagar and President Sean Ringrose,talked  about the upcoming Shark Week.

There are 55 swimmers on the team this year, with three from Arizona, Colorado and Washington. The team has had an outstanding year winning several first-place ribbons and breaking several records. 

Starting Monday, the team will be holding a week-long fundraiser. The team will host its annual Medal Meet Saturday, July 14. Teams from Sidney, Alliance, Hemingford, Lusk, Bridgeport and Rushville will be competing. 

The team wants to start earning the donations that are given to the team by holding a fun fundraiser. At 6 p.m. Monday, the team will host Shark Races, with local business or residents racing against team members pledging money to win the race. Relay teams are welcome.

Two-Mile Tuesday will start at 6:30 a.m. Team members will be swimming two miles each.

Additional events include:

n Wednesday, July 11 Team Breakfast.

n Thursday, July 12, 6:30 a.m. obstacle course in the pool for people to complete.

n Friday, July13 set up with the help of parents for the swim meet. 

n Saturday the 14 9 a.m. swim meet.

 The Sharks want the community to become involved with their team and invite people come out for the events and have fun.

The council awarded the bid for a five-yard dump truck with plow to DIT Trucks of Wheat Ridge Colorado in the amount of $42,250. The truck will be used by Streets and Sanitation.

The council also approved the contract for Daniel Szymanski at the Airport following an executive session.
