Tigers heads to postseason with win over Casper

TORRINGTON – Torrington clean-up hitter Jared Myrtle has been on a terror the last two games for the, recording eight RBIs in a recent split with the Wheatland Lobos and the Casper Drillers.

“He’s a big part of the team,” Tiger coach Andy Brown said. “He hits clean up, and our goal is to get base runners on base when he’s up to the plate. That is why he’s in the spot. It’s an important role.”

The Tigers managed a split of those two games, losing in walk-off fashion to the Lobos Saturday and turning around and run-ruling the Drillers on Monday afternoon.

Wheatland 8, Torrington 7

On Saturday, Torrington and Wheatland went back-and-forth for nine innings before Wheatland’s two-out single capped off the 8-7 come-from-behind victory for the Lobos.

Torrington jumped out to a quick 5-0 advantage through two and a half innings of play before Wheatland mounted its comeback.

“We need to learn how to keep the pressure on the other team when we have the lead and use that momentum to our advantage,” Brown said. “It’s part of the game with a tough loss like that, but we picked ourselves up and got a big win (Monday).”

Back-to-back walks from Sam Firminhac and Jackson Jones and Jared Myrtle’s two-RBI single gave the Tigers the lead in the top of the first inning.

Myrtle made it 4-0 with a two-RBI double in the second inning, while Doucette added an RBI single of his own in the top of the third.

The Lobos got on the scoreboard with two in the bottom of the third and tied the game at six apiece in the home half of the fifth.

The score remained tied at six until the bottom of the eighth when Wheatland snagged the lead for the first time in the game with a two-out RBI single.

However, in the top of the ninth, it was Myrtle who collected his fifth RBI of the game on with a game-tying single.

Wheatland got out of the jam, recording three straight outs, but in the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, Wheatland singled, driving in the walk-off run.

Myrtle went 3-for-5 to go along with five RBIs in the loss. Jackson went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Torrington 16, Casper 6

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead Monday afternoon and cruised to a 16-6 victory over Drillers.

“It was a great win. What a way to close out the regular season with a win against Casper, usually a good ball club,” Brown said. “We pitched the ball well. We minimized walks for the most part. We hit the ball well and played with the lead, most importantly.”

Firminhac got things going in the first with a leadoff single, and it was Myrtle who drove in the game’s first run.

Myrtle drove in two more in the bottom of the second bringing the score to 6-1.

By the top of the fifth, Casper trimmed Torrington’s lead to 10-6, but that proved as close as the Drillers came to seeing the lead the remainder of the afternoon,

The Tigers added six more unanswered runs over the next two innings to complete the run-rule with a two-out infield single courtesy of Daniel Wayland.

Sebastian Doucette picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers, pitching 4 2/3 innings.

The Tigers will make a return trip to Wheatland for the East District Tournament, beginning on Thursday and wraps up Saturday. The Tigers will face Douglas Thursday at 5 p.m., Cheyenne Friday at 5 p.m. and Wheatland at 8 p.m. Saturday in a round-robin format tournament for seeding purposes for the American Legion Class A State Tournament.

“Our mentality is, our season starts now,” Brown concluded. “We are playing for the highest seed, and we aren’t going to take any games off. Higher the seed, the better set up we will be for the state tournament.”
