Tigers 3-hit in blowout loss to Cody

TORRINGTON – After a 1-2-3 first inning, the Cody Cubs’ Cooper Brown leadoff double in the bottom of the second set the tone for the final four innings of play Wednesday evening in the final game of the opening round of the 2018 Wyoming State ‘A’ Legion Baseball Tournament.

The two-bagger snowballed into a 32-1 win in favor of the defending state champions.

Cody scored nine runs in the second, seven in the third and 16 in the fourth.

Torrington had scoring opportunities in each inning before finally getting one across with two out in the top of the fifth inning.

The Tigers got a two-out walk and a steal from Cameron Murphy before Cody could get the final out of the first inning.

In the second inning, Bo Moorehouse reached on a leadoff walk before being moved to third on a pair of groundouts.

In the third, Jackson Jones worked a walk, and Murphy followed it up with a double. The duo was stranded at second and third.

In the top of the fourth, Moorehouse was tagged out at home on a double by Caden Riley.

Finally, in the last inning, Gabe Mitchell drove in Torrington’s only run or the ball game, driving in Sebastian Doucette who had reached on an error.

When the final out was recorded, Torrington managed only three hits for the game – one each from Mitchell, Murphy and Riley.

Meanwhile, Cody lit up the scoreboard with 19 hits and 13 base on balls.

Jordan Wasia paced the Cugs attack with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with four RBIs and three runs scored. Brown added another three hits to the mix with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Wasia also earned the win, striking out five in 3 1/3 innings, while Riley was tagged with the loss for the Tigers, striking out six but giving up 14 runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Cody advanced to play Riverton, while Torrington fell to play Cheyenne in an elimination game Thursday. Check back in Wednesday’s Telegram for a recap of the weekend’s action from Dean Bullock Field.
