JACKSON – The Torrington Tigers 15-and-under baseball team took a long road trip to Jackson for a tournament Saturday and Sunday, winning their first game before losing three straight.
The Tigers got off to a strong start, scoring their first three batters of the game to take a 3-0 lead. The bats came alive for Torrington in the second inning, as they scored 12 runs. They added another seven in the third to seal the 22-0 over Rawlins.
“We knew we had this game and it’s just another day at the field. You just have to regroup and get your mind right,” manager Andy Brown said of coming out hot after the long road trip. “That’s just the life of baseball – traveling and playing everyday.”
Cameron Murphy and Sam Firminhac both scored four runs in the win. The duo combined for five hits, two walks and a hit by pitch. Teddy Carr was a power hitter in the game, recording a double and triple. Six different Tigers scored in the win.
After winning by such a wide margin, the Tigers took on the host team, Jackson. The Tigers allowed three runs in the first two innings and were unable to recover, falling 9-0. Torrington struggled to get on base. The Tigers recorded only three hits and a walk in the loss.
To open up action Sunday, the Tigers squared off against Rock Springs, falling in a close one, 4-3. Torrington struck first, scoring two in the second, but Rock Springs battled back to plate two in the third. Both teams scored one run in the fifth to put the game in a 3-3 tie. Rock Springs plated a late run to seal the one-run win.
“A couple small plays here and there made the difference,” Brown said. “Small stuff goes a long ways and that game proved that.”

Gabe Mitchell, Caeden Riley and Tristan Kingsley combined for the three runs in the loss. Mitchell and Kingsley each had two singles in the game, while Riley got on base via walk twice. Gage Correa added a single in the loss.
Torrington struggled to get their bats going in the final game of the weekend against Riverton. Riverton plated five runs in the first inning and added another in the fifth to snag a 6-0 win over Torrington. Carr and Riley were the only Tigers with hits against Riverton, accounting for a single apiece.

Double-header
The Tigers returned to their home diamond Monday against Chadron, Neb., splitting the two games. In the first contest, Torrington used two runs in the sixth inning to secure the 6-4 win.
Carr and Jackson Jones came around to score in the first inning to give Torrington an early 2-0 lead. Chadron came back to score two runs of their own in the second. Kingsley and Daniel Wayland scored another two in the fourth, with Chadron again bouncing back to plate two in the fifth.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth with the game tied at 4, Nick Sherbeyn and Firminhac both scored to put the game out of reach.
Wayland and Carr each had two hits in the game, with Firminhac, Jones and Kingsley each adding one.
Chadron managed to rebound and pick up the win in the second game, 4-2. Torrington scored on run in the first inning. Both team were unable to score until Chadron scored one in the fourth and added three in the sixth. One run in the bottom of the sixth was not enough.
Murphy and Firminhac scored the two runs in the loss. Sherbeyn, Carr, Firminhac and Wayland had the only four hits in the game.
The Tigers now sit at 11-13, with 15 games left before the state tournament.
“It’s just a matter of the mindset of the team and we have to learn how to light the fire and get it going,” Brown said. “Baseball is a mental game and we have to learn how to get mentally prepared for all of these games. We’re improving and we made a giant step in the right direction tonight.”
Torrington returns to the diamond for a tournament Friday and Saturday in Chadron. The Tigers are slated to play Kimball, Neb. on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., before playing Chadron (11 a.m.) and Laramie (1:15 p.m.) on Sunday.
