Tiger C-NE team holds on to sweep Mitchell

TORRINGTON – The Torrington C-NE team held on to defeat Mitchell 9-5 in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday evening.

Mitchell left the bases loaded in the first and second innings, only scoring one run. In the first two innings, Torrington plated five runs.

Landre Greiman’s leadoff single set the tone for the first innings. He stole second and third base before a wild pitch scored the first run of the game. Mac Hibben and Brady Cook tallied hits in the three-run first inning.

In the second, Anthony Moser was hit by a pitch to open start the inning. Drew Kramer walked and Greiman had an RBI groundout. Wyler Fisher laid down a squeeze bunt pushed the Torrington lead to 5-1.

In the top of the third, Mitchell began its comeback attempt.

The Mayhem scored three to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Mitchell tied the game at five apiece in the top of the fourth.

The tie didn’t last long as Greiman recorded his second RBI of the game, scoring Moser.

In the bottom of the of the fifth, Torrington looked to put the game away.

Hibben doubled, Cook walked and Greiman had his third RBI of the game. Ryan Moorehouse reached on a dropped third strike, and he stole second and third base before a throwing error brought him around for the team’s third run of the inning.

But the Mayhem wasn’t going to go away quietly.

Torrington recorded two quick outs, but a single, followed back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Mitchell doubled on next at-bat, scoring two runs. However, after the play came to an end, the umpire inspected the bat, ultimately calling the batter out, erasing the two runs and ending the game.

In game two, Torrington edged Mitchell, 7-5.

No stats from the games were available at press time. The Tigers are now 11-3 on the season.

Saturday’s doubleheader in Mitchell was canceled. The Tigers are back in action on Monday, June 13 in a conference doubleheader against Gillette. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Jirdon Park.
