THS volleyball sweeps Newcastle

TORRINGTON - The Torrington High School volleyball team celebrated Homecoming with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) sweep of the Newcastle Dogies on Friday afternoon.

The Lady Blazers scored the first two points of the match, and Newcastle led only once throughout the entire match.

During the middle stages of the opening set, Torrington held a 13-8 advantage.

Newcastle cut the THS lead to 14-12 before Torrington pulled away, using a 9-1 run.

In the second set, the Lady Blazers jumped out to a 4-1 lead behind a Brummell block and a kill.

Newcastle later tied the set at seven apiece, but Torrington outscored the Lady Dogies 18-7 the remainder of the set.

In the third set, it was Newcastle who jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but it was short-lived.

Junior Sierra Allen’s block tied the match at five, and junior Reece Halley’s kill put the Lady Blazers back in front for the remainder of the set.

Halley led the team with 12 kills, while Michaela Moorehouse added nine. Brummell had six kills and four blocks. Stitt had a team-high two aces.

Moorehouse recorded a team-high 16 digs, while Halley had 13. Senior Morgan Bates tallied 26 assists.

The victory was the eighth of the season, improving the Lady Blazer record to 8-2.

Torrington makes the return trip to Newcastle on Tuesday, Oct. 6. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
