CHEYENNE – The Torrington High School tennis team returned to the courts in Cheyenne on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader with Cheyenne East and Central high schools.

It was a clean sweep for the Cheyenne schools.

The Central Indians handed both Torrington boys and girls 5-0 losses, while the Blazers picked up one win each against the East Thunderbirds.

In the girls’ action, the No. 1 doubles team of Tyne Stokes and Jacee Sheilds picked up a 2-1 (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) win over Nedra McIIwaine and Lindsay Eldred.

“Stokes and Shields worked hard and battled to win in three sets to East,” THS coach Curtis Birkley said. “They served well and put balls away at the net.”

Torrington’s No. 2 doubles team of Elyssa Cummings and Bethany Wunibald forced a tie-breaker in the first set but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

In the boys’ division, the Blazer No. 2 doubles team of Aidyn Saucedo and Cody Clayton picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Nathan Zastoupil and Nick Colgan.

“Saucedo and Clayton took care of business and had control of the match against east playing well at the net and limiting unforced errors,” Birkley said.

Meanwhile, the No. 1 doubles team of Julian Wolf and Benji Brady fell 2-1 after winning the first set, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“All of the team has done a great job of taking what we are doing in practice and putting it into their match play,” Birkley said.
