THS tennis sweeps Rock Springs, Rawlins

LARAMIE – The Torrington High School tennis teams picked up two wins apiece over the weekend with victories over Rawlins and Rock Springs.

The Rawlins match originally scheduled for Thursday was pushed to Friday with the Lady Blazers picking up a 5-0 win, while the boys’ team edged the Outlaws 3-2.

In singles action Bethany Wunibald scored a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Jaycee Shields won 6-7 (7-2), 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action, Kayla Watson and Shaelee Jackson won 6-4, 6-4, while Julianna Russell and Jazmyne West were victorious 6-0, 6-0. Reagan Jackson and Katie Watson rounded out the sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

“Our girls played great against Rawlins,” coach Alex Schaneman said. “It’s amazing how much improvement that they have made in the little time that we have had matches.  It will be fun to continue to watch them grow and improve their game this season.”

In the boys’ division, No. 1 singles player Aidyn Saucedo, No. 1 doubles team of Isaac Bartlett and Cody Clayton and No. 2 doubles team of Adam Bartlett and Ben Firminhac picked up wins to secure the team win over Rawlins.

“Our boys also played well against Rawlins,” Schaneman said.

Saucedo picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Isaac Bartlett and Clayton scored a 6-2, 6-3 win. Adam Bartlett and Firminhac defeated Rawlins 6-3, 6-3.

No. 2 singles player Gabe Russell fell in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, while the No. 3 doubles team of Jorey Asmus and Gabe Posten lost 6-3, 6-3.

In the junior varsity ranks, Olivia Judkins, Connor Osmotherly and Marcus Jones picked up victories against Rawlins.

Against Rock Springs, the Lady Blazers defeated the Lady Tigers 3-2, while the boys’ team won 4-1.

“Our girls really showed a lot of improvement today against Rock Springs,” Schaneman said.

Wunibald battled back after losing her first set to pick up the win 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 6-3, while Shields won 6-2, 6-0. Kayla Watson and Shaelee Jackson secured the team win for Torrington with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 doubles slot for their first win of the season.

In the boys’ division, the Blazers swept the singles division with a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Saucedo and a 6-0, 6-1 win by Isaac Bartlett. The doubles teams of Clayton and Russell, along with Adam Bartlett and Ben Firminhac picked up wins en route to the team victory.

“Our boys dominated nearly all of the matches in this one,” Schaneman said.

The Blazers are back at home on Thursday, Aug. 26 against the two Casper schools. They host Kelly Walsh at 10 a.m. and Natrona County at 2 p.m.
