CHEYENNE – The Torrington High School tennis team traveled to Cheyenne on Tuesday to face Cheyenne Central and East high schools.

Against Central, the Indians handed the Blazers a pair of 5-0 losses.

In the girls’ division, Olive Judkins, who was filling in for Katie Watson, and Madix McIntosh fell 6-0, 6-0. In doubles action, Juliana Russell and Madison Hatch lost 6-0, 6-1, while Marlee Foy and Laney Grubbs dropped a pair of sets 6-2. 

“Those two girls just work hard and don’t ever give up,” THS coach Lauren Shields said of Foy and Grubbs.

In the third doubles match, Madison Boyden and Haley DeFoe lost 6-0, 6-3.

In the boys’ division, No. 1 singes Adam Bartlett came the closest to picking up a win for the Blazers, ultimately falling 6-4, 6-3.

“Adam did not play his best against Central,” Shields said. “He certainly still worked hard and competed. When Adam is on his game, he can play with just about anybody.”

In the other singles match, Jorey Asmus lost 6-2, 6-2. In doubles action, Elijah Hatch and Skyler Thomas fell 6-3, 6-1, while Steven Schneider and Gabe Posten lost 6-2, 6-0. In the other doubles match, Marcus Jones and Ben Steinbrecher lost 6-1, 6-2.

Later in the day, the Blazers also faced Cheyenne East, and the Lady Blazers picked up a 3-2 win over the Thunderbirds.

Judkins lost 6-0, 6-3, but McIntosh picked up a 6-4, 6-6 (10-8) win.

“Madix came out hitting the ball hard and playing great in the first set, which is what we have seen her done a bunch,” Shields said. 

McIntosh found herself down 4-1 but battled back to win the tiebreaker.

“Once she realized that she needed to dictate play, she came back and won in a tie breaker 10-8,” Shields said. “I was so proud of her for making a comeback like this.”

The other wins went to Foy and Grubbs who scored a 6-2, 6-4 win, while Boyden and DeFoe won 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

“These girls were super fun to watch today,” Shields said. “They played great doubles with both girls taking the net and volleying well to win the match. It was also good to see that they stayed mentally focused through a longer match that went three sets. I’m excited to see what these girls do at regionals, they could make some noise”

Meanwhile, the boys’ team lost 4-1 to East.

The lone win went to the No. 1 doubles team of Hatch and Thomas, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The Blazers travel to Laramie on Saturday, Sept. 9 for a junior varsity tournament. The varsity team turns its attention to the South Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16 in Cheyenne.
