DOUGLAS – The Torrington High School girls’ and boys’ wrestling teams commenced the new year with solid performances at the annual Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament hosted by Douglas on January 5-6.

One of the larger events in eastern Wyoming, the tournament featured nearly 30 teams from across Wyoming, in addition to a few squads from Nebraska and Colorado. Programs ranged in size from small schools like Dubois to large 4A powerhouses in Cheyenne, Casper and Gillette.

The Torrington Blazers snagged 15th place out of 28 teams in the boys’ tournament, posting 44 points. Junior Tyler Nicolay was the only Torrington wrestler to break into the finals, fighting his way back through the consolation rounds at 120 pounds to place sixth overall.

In the girls’ competition, the Lady Blazers, fielding only two athletes, took 23rd place with 10 points. Sophomore Aubree Fahrmeyer tallied seven team points while freshman Iree Hershey added three points.

Many Torrington athletes contributed points to the boys’ team effort for wins in opening or consolation rounds and came close to making it into the finals in their respective weight classes.

Junior Kaden Romig posted 11 points, winning two opening rounds and a consolation round in the 150-pound division. Sophomore Colby Sandusky earned nine points for the team with four wins in the consolation rounds at 144 pounds.

Sophomore Brendan Woodard tallied six points, beating his opponents in the two opening rounds at 157 pounds. Senior Reece Grubbs posted four team points at 132 points.
