

THS girls fourth at Buffalo

BUFFALO – The Torrington High School golf team wrapped up its regular season on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 in Buffalo.
The Lady Blazers finished fourth in the final team standings in a 10-team tournament, while the boys’ team finished ninth out of 12 teams.
Kaleigh Waymire led the Torrington girls with an 11th-place finish with rounds of 99 and 93 to finish the weekend with a 192. Madyson Banister shot rounds of 102 and 100 to finish with a 202, while teammate Madison Gibson was four strokes back after rounds of 101 and 105 for a weekend total of 206. Sarah Birdsall rounded out the Torrington scoring with a 239 after rounds of 117 and 122.
As a team, the Lady Blazers shot 600. Sheridan won the team title with 510, while Thunder Basin was second with 571. Douglas was third with 572.
In the boys’ division, Caleb Kelly led the Blazers with rounds of 88 and 83 for a two-day total of 171, tying for 24th overall out of 139 players. Connor Correll placed five strokes behind his teammate with a total of 176 following rounds of 86 and 90. Masen Wilkes shot a pair of 95s to shot 190 for the weekend, while Spencer Booth shot 101 and 100. Mason Unverzagt shot 106 and 121.
“I felt like some of our kids, the girls especially, took some good strides forward this week,” coach Jeff Halley said.
The Blazers begin postseason golf this week with a trip to Wheatland on Sept. 8-9 for the 3A East Conference meet.
