WORLAND – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of Riverton on Saturday in Worland for the state qualifying round, ending the Lady Blazers’ season.

“The ladies played hard and played all the way down to the final whistle,” coach Travis Rapp said. “Everyone was disappointed at the outcome, of course. I thought we played well against a pretty good Riverton team.”

The Lady Wolverines struck first. The score was knotted up at 1-1 after an own goal by Riverton. Torrington had a corner kick and after a scrum in front of the net, the ball found its way into the goal off of a Riverton deflection. Riverton pushed its advantage to 2-1 after 15 minutes.

“We played our game plan the whole game and controlled most of the game,” Rapp said. “We had some great chances at goal in the second half and either saw them go wide or their keeper put a stop to them… It was the top two or three games we played this year as far as how we played, just didn’t get enough finishes.”

Riverton got their third goal with five minutes to go on a free kick just under the crossbar to seal the 3-1 win.

By the end of the game, Jenessa Derby had nine saves. She was pulled late in the game in an effort to use her fresh legs to snag a late goal. In her absence, Mia Saucedo recorded four saves between the pipes.

The loss dropped the Lady Blazers to 0-14-2 on the year. Riverton advanced to the state tournament with the win, ending Torrington’s season.

“I’ve always told these ladies I’d go to battle with them any day of the week, and this season hasn’t changed that a bit,” Rapp said. “When you look at all the statistics outside of win-loss record, we took huge leaps in goals scored, scoring opportunities and we allowed less goals, I believe. Overall, we made great gains and I hope the girls use the next nine months to keep them from taking any steps back.”
