THS girls drop season-finale, to compete in Worland

RAWLINS – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers soccer team fell on the road Saturday to conference foe Rawlins, 5-2, putting the Lady Blazers in the third seed in the conference, which sends the team to the qualifying round.

"That was a rough encounter for us. We traveled with just 15 girls, as we had a whole wide variety of reasons girls were not available," coach Travis Rapp said. "We were missing five of our top 12-13 girls and that really ate into our reserves as well. We had some JV girls put in minutes in a varsity contest, where maybe they hadn't played more than five minutes of varsity yet this season."

By halftime, the Lady Blazers were down 2-0. Brooke Peterson looked to kick start the Lady Blazer offense when she found the back of the net in the 44th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. The Lady Outlaws rebounded with two quick goals to push their advantage to 4-1 and another goal late in the contest put the game out of reach for the Lady Blazers.

"Our first half we didn't move as well or win 50-50 balls as much as we'd like to, and that's why we went down 2-0 at half," Rapp said. "The girls came out in the second half with a good push, getting those two goals rather early in the half, but we ran out of legs and couldn't get a push through the end of the half."

Jade Cooper did have a goal in the second half, but it was not enough to give Torrington the win. Jenessa Derby amassed eight saves before exiting the game due to injury. Mia Saucedo went in as a relief keeper, finishing with three saves.

The loss dropped the Lady Blazers to 0-13-2 on the year. Their 0-3-1 mark in the conference put them in the third slot at the end of the regular season. As the third seed from the 3A Southeast, Torrington takes on Riverton, the second seed from the 3A Southwest, at the state qualifying round in Worland. The game is set to kick off at 2 p.m. with a berth to the state tournament on the line.

"Honestly, all we have been missing this season is finishing," Rapp said. "We have had goals scored by several girls in almost all of our games, but we need to get hungry near the goal and just let the shots fly. Our percentages are good when we take the shot, we just need to take more, more often.

"Riverton is an athletic team, so we will focus on possessing and make them chase us throughout the match," Rapp added. "If we can do that, and get healthy before Saturday, we should be heading to Jackson next weekend."
