GERING, Neb. – The Torrington High School boys’ tennis team traveled across the state line to Gering, Nebraska on Tuesday afternoon for a triangular with Alliance and Gering.

Torrington picked up wins over the two Nebraska schools.

The Blazers swept Alliance, 5-0, playing Wyoming style of lineup which included one and two singles and one, two and three doubles. The singles players did the best two out of three, while the doubles teams played eight-game prosets.

Adam Bartlett recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.

“Adam played well, he continued with his strategy of getting to the net and volleying against his opponent,” coach Lauren Shields said.

At No. 2 singles, Jorey Asmus won 6-4, 6-1.

“Jorey had some really great deep ground strokes this match that helped lead him to victory,” Shields said. “He was also getting to the net and volleying more in this match.”

In doubles action, Elijah Hatch and Skyler Thomas, along with Steven Schneider and Gabe Posten won 8-0.

“Alliance really struggled to return either boys’ serves in this match,” Shields said.

March Jones and Ben Steinbrecher completed the sweep with an 8-2 win.

Against Gering, they played a Nebraska style match which featured one, two and three singles and one and two doubles. It allowed Shields to switch up the lineup, but the Blazers still came away with a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs.

The major switch made by the coach was allowing Hatch and Thomas to get some singles action.

Asmus played the No. 1 singles spot for Torrington and suffered the team’s only loss of the day 6-2, 6-2.

“The kid Jorey played, had the same style of play as Jorey which frustrates most singles players,” Shields said. “Jorey seemed a little tired this match and made some uncharacteristic errors in this match. What I love about Jorey is that he doesn’t quit, and he wants guidance to improve.”

Hatch held down the No. 2 singles, picking up a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) victory.

“Elijah is fun to watch play singles, he is fast and can get to lots of shots,” Shields said. “He can get a little wild on his groundstrokes and that is where his errors came from in this match.”

Thomas picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 3 singles position.

“Skyler is fast and plays typical singles, liking to stay on the baseline and hit groundstrokes with his opponent,” Shields said. “Skyler had several winners in this match, and it went fast due to his large amount of winners. It was a good experience for both Elijah and Skyler to play singles today.”

In doubles action, Barlett teamed up with Schneider in the No. 1 doubles spot, picking up 6-2, 6-0, while the No. 2 team of Posten and Jones won 6-2, 6-2.

Torrington hosts Laramie on Friday, Sept. 1. It is the Blazers’ final home match of the season, and the team will honor the seniors prior to the start of the varsity match. Junior varsity matches will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the varsity to follow at 1 p.m.
