TORRINGTON – The Torrington Trailblazers and Cody Broncs are no strangers to each other in championship games, because the two schools played for the 3A title in soccer last season, with Cody picking up the 1-0 win.
Although Torrington and Cody have recently played each other for the soccer title, the last time the two programs met for a football championship was in 1958. Cody snagged a 15-7 win over the Blazers for the Class A title.
1958 was the first time the Blazers and Broncs clashed, but according to Wyoming-football.com, the two teams have met seven times since, four of which came in the playoffs. In their eight matchups, Torrington is 3-5 against Cody.
Most recently, Torrington fell to Cody during the regular season in 2010, 47-0. In 2009, the two teams played each other twice, with the Blazers winning the regular season matchup 12-10 but falling in the quarterfinals, 19-6. The two teams met in the quarterfinals in 2008 as well, with Cody advancing on another 47-0 win.
The Blazers are coming into the championship contest this year on a hot streak, winning their last eight games. In the playoffs, Torrington picked up a win over Worland 46-21, before beating Green River last week, 17-13. The Blazers have outscored their opponents 416-123 this season.
Cody is coming into Friday with not as high scoring of an offense, racking up 235 points this year, but their defense is just as stifling as Torrington’s, allowing only 116 points. The Broncs sit at 6-3 on the year and they have hit a bit of a hot streak of their own, winning their previous four games. In the playoffs, Cody, the third seed from the west upset Buffalo, 27-0, before besting the two-time defending champions in Star Valley last week, 31-21.
Torrington and Cody have played four common opponents this year in Buffalo, Green River, Worland and Star Valley. The Broncs played Buffalo and Star Valley twice, going 1-1 against both opponents, but picking up the wins that mattered in the playoffs. Cody lost to Green River but beat Worland in the regular season.
Against the four teams that both programs have played in 2017, Torrington is 3-1, with that sole loss coming against Star Valley. Torrington beat Buffalo in the regular season before winning in the postseason over Worland and Green River.
The Blazers, who are playing in their first championship game since 1996 and looking for their first title since 1990, will face a team at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie who is only three years removed from their fourth state title in program history.
