CASPER – The Torrington Lady Blazers concluded its 2018 season with an 0-2 weekend at the Class 3A State Volleyball Tournament at the Casper Events Center.
The Lady Blazers opened the tournament with undefeated and eventual state champion Lyman on Thursday afternoon.
Torrington got off to a good start, grabbing an early 3-2 advantage.
Lady Blazer senior Katelyn Wright tied the match at two and freshman Avery West followed it up with a block to give their team the one-point lead.
It was short-lived as the Eagles controlled the remainder of the match en route to a 25-13, 25-1, 25-11 win over the Lady Blazers.
Lyman scored the next six points.
Sophomore Michaela Moorehouse cut the deficit to three with a kill, but that proved as close as Torrington came to seeing the lead the remainder of the day.
In the second set, the Eagles cruised to a 25-1 set win.
Lyman scored the first 22 points before senior Brielle Bivens scored the team’s only point of the set.
The fourth set wasn’t much better.
Lyman raced out to a 7-1 lead as the Eagles held the Lady Blazers to only 11 points in the final set.
The next day, Torrington squared off with the No. 3-seeded Powell Panthers.
Powell ended the Lady Blazer season with a 25-18, 25-12, 25-16 loss.
Torrington grabbed early leads in both of the first two sets, but neither resulted in set wins.
In the opening set, the Lady Blazers held an early 4-3 lead before the Panthers grabbed their first lead.
Torrington didn’t allow Powell’s lead to grow more than four until the Panthers ended the set with a 9-4 spurt.
In the second set, the Lady Blazers came out, scoring the first four points of the set, but the Panthers answered with nine straight points.
Powell kept the momentum on its side of the court going into the third set, putting Torrington in an early 6-1 hole.
Lady Blazer sophomore Emily McGaugh served up an ace serve, sparking a rally.
Wright served up an ace of her own to tie the match at nine.
The set was tied on one other occasion before Powell started to pull away for the nine-point win.
No stats were available at press time.
The Lady Blazers ended the season with a 10-22 record.
