Giants defeat Cubs for Little League title

TORRINGTON – The third time was a charm for the Giants in the Torrington Little League Championship game.

After coming up short in two previous appearances in the title game, the Giants overcame an early deficit to defeat the Cubs 10-5 on Thursday evening at the Torrington Sports Complex.

The top-seeded Cubs hoped to put the game away early with four quick runs in the bottom of the first inning.

A leadoff walk by Barrett Bruch and a single by Skyler Patrick, followed by a wild pitch drove in the game’s first run.

Morgan Cross and Harrison Rodriquez got RBI hits, while a throwing error scored Rodriquez.

The Cubs threatened again in the bottom of the second but left runners at second and third to end the inning. The Cubs lead remained 4-0 until the top of the fourth inning.

In the fourth, the Giants strung some hits together and began their comeback.

A leadoff double by Beaux Shimic, followed by singles from Connor Coxbill and Hadley Evans drove in the Giants first run.

It was the start of a six-run frame.

The Giants also got hits from Elijah Mathias and Alex Fox to go along with multiple Cub errors to take a 6-4 lead.

The Cubs got one of those runs back in the home half of the fourth when Cross drove in a run on a two-out double.

That proved to be as close as the Cubs came to seeing the lead for the remainder of the game.

The Giants scored two in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the victory.
