Third quarter aides EWC women

TRINIDAD, Colo. – The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers faced a six-point halftime deficit on the road Saturday, but turned things around in the second to pick up a 76-65 win over Trinidad State Junior College.

Trinidad State jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the first quarter but then the two teams traded the lead several times. A three-pointer in the final minute of the first by Cathlyn Knutson sent EWC into the second quarter down 24-21. After an explosive first quarter, both offenses were stifled in the second. A three by Pamela Bethel put EWC up 30-28, but the home team closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 36-30 lead into intermission.

Two quick buckets from behind the arc by EWC tied the score at 36 in 31 seconds. EWC took a lead on three by Abril Rexach Roure, but the Lady Trojans stormed back to take a 44-41 lead.  After tying the score at 44, the Lady Lancers never relinquished the lead, heading into the final 10 minutes up 57-52. EWC continually added distance against Trinidad State, picking up the 11-point win.

Bethel was 4-of-7 from behind the arc and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line on her way to 20 points on the night to pace EWC, which she combined with 13 rebounds, a steal and two blocks.

Roure notched 14 points, five rebounds, three steals and five assists. Lauren O’Connell packed her stat line with 11 points, five boards, three steals and a block. O’Connell and Roure combined for 15 points from behind the arc.

Rounding out the starters, Macie Mackey and Nicole Cutler combined for six points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Emily Buchanan was the top contributor off the bench, recording eight points, three rebounds and a steal. Ines Salat Margarit and Knutson notched six points apiece, while Margarit had two boards, five assists and three steals and Knutson added a board and a steal. Kelliann Raff and Ijeoma Ezikeolisa combined for five points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal.

The win was EWC’s third-straight, all against divisional opponents, bringing the Lady Lancers up to 16-10 on the year. They look to continue their winning streak when they return to their home floor this weekend. EWC hosts Otero Junior College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Lamar Community College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
