Thelma Irene Garton, 96, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14  at the Platte County Legacy Home in Wheatland.
Thelma Garton was born Monday, March 19, 1923 in Wheatland the only child of Albin and Mary Irene (McComber) Plaga.  
Thelma spent her childhood on the family ranch west of Wheatland.  At the age of 12, she went to high school in Laramie,  attending Ivinson Hall, and University Prep. After attending the University of Wyoming for one year, she taught at country schools. On Nov. 6, 1942 she married Robert L. “Bob” Garton. When Bob returned from World War II, they made their home in Torrington where Thelma taught school.  In 1947 they moved to the family ranch, where they made their home until 1979. They moved into Wheatland.  During those years, Thelma graduated from the University of Wyoming, taught country schools, and also taught in Torrington and Wheatland.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church, Eastern Star, Daughter of the Nile, and was a past member of the Cowbelles.
She is survived by her son, Steven (Margo) Garton of Nickerson, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Kathy Garton of Wheatland; grandchildren, Travis (Kelli) Garton of Denver, Colo., Tyrell (Breana) Garton of Wheatland, Coy (NJ) Garton of Tipton, Iowa, Bobbie Hammond of Lake Jackson, Texas; and great grandchildren, Bridger Garton, Will Garton, Taylor Garton, and Tosha Garton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Garton, on Feb. 6, 1981; close companion, Ernie Brammer in 2004; and son, Greg Garton, on June 3, 2018.
A graveside service will be held in the spring of 2020.
The Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel of Wheatland are in charge of the arrangements.
