GOSHEN COUNTY – Amid a full day of interviews and school tours, Dr. Jan DeLay of Sterling, Colo. kicked off the first of three public forums scheduled this week for superintendent candidates Monday evening.

“I have roots in the western rural area, and I have a passion for working with the people who are working to raise our crops and raise our food and helping you raise your kids to be their best selves,” DeLay said in her introduction to the crowd.

She is currently superintendent of RE-1 Valley School District, a position which she’s held since 2013.

“I do have a teaching background and a big passion for making a difference in a school district that’s just like this,” DeLay said.

Her professional experience includes teaching deaf and hard-of-hearing students; mid-management activities in a rural setting; early childhood coordination; and creating home-visiting programs to “make a difference for kids by working with adults.”

DeLay described her management style as “very collaborative,” touting respect for community, students, staff and administrators.

She also spoke of the importance of working with the local community college and other organizations to increase opportunities for students via grants and general cooperation.

Praising the district’s mission statement, DeLay especially expressed an interest in exploring student social-emotional learning and working with a growth mindset.

DeLay’s previous work experience includes Federal Programs and English Language Learning Director at Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colo. and graduate instructor at Colorado State University. DeLay has a Ph.D in Education and Human Resource Studies with a specialty in Educational Leadership from CSU.

Public forums for the remaining two candidates are scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, 6 to 7 p.m., Torrington Middle School Commons, featuring Mr. Dennis Fischer of Wheatland; and Thursday, March 28, 6 to 7 p.m., Torrington High School Library, with Mr. Ryan Kramer of Hawarden, Iowa.
